The charisma of Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes comes through relatively untarnished. They’re an unlikely couple, but it really does work here.

Consensus: Too blandly generic, Maid in Manhattan also suffers from a lack of chemistry between Lopez and Fiennes.

In Revolution Studios' charming romantic comedy Maid in Manhattan, Jennifer Lopez stars as a hard-working, intelligent and determined single mother who dreams of a better life. While struggling as a housekeeper at Manhattan's first-class Beresford Hotel, she falls for a rising politician, who mistakenly assumes she's a socialite guest at the hotel.
Will a hotel worker from the Bronx and a well-heeled gentleman from midtown Manhattan risk it all for a chance at romance?
Marisa Ventura has made a good life for herself and her ten-year-old son, Ty (Tyler Garcia Posey), even if they don't have a lot of money. One Saturday morning Marisa brings Ty to the Beresford. She asks a co-worker to keep an eye on him for her while she and another maid, Stephanie (Marissa Matrone), attend to their chores. One of the hotel guests, a spoiled socialite, Caroline Lane (Natasha Richardson), asks Marisa to return some designer clothes for her. After Caroline leaves, Stephanie coaxes Marisa into trying them on before taking them back to the store. In an uncharacteristically frivolous moment, Marisa slips into the chic, expensive outfits.
Ty appears at the door with the handsome Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes), an aspiring U.S. Senator and one of Manhattan's most eligible bachelors. Ty has come to ask Marisa's permission to walk through Central Park with Christopher and his dog Rufus. Christopher is immediately attracted to Marisa. Assuming she is a hotel guest, he asks her to join them. She is about to refuse, but Stephanie intervenes and accepts for her.
Despite the obvious sparks between them, Marisa is reluctant to encourage Christopher, fearing she'll lose all that she's worked so hard to build. But he pursues her, even though it could compromise his political career.
As romance, mistaken identity and front-page gossip collide, Marisa and Christopher learn that the bigger your dreams, the better the chance they might come true.

Reviews for Maid in Manhattan
While it's not perfect, the faults are easily overlooked by the spirited performances of its cast.
An undemandingly agreeable trifle that should satisfy anyone in search of an old-fashioned Cinderella story at the megaplex.
It's really hard not to like Jennifer Lopez, and she's a wonderful, likable underdog in this.
It's a warm, if pallid, romantic comedy that may not do much more to burnish Lopez's reputation, but will certainly not bruise it.
The movie would almost qualify as pleasant, were it not for a certain condescension in its treatment of working-class life and its offhand assumption that lives not buoyed by riches or aggrandized by fame are hardly worth living.
In the affable Maid in Manhattan, Jennifer Lopez's most aggressive and most sincere attempt to take movies by storm, the diva shrewdly surrounds herself with a company of strictly A-list players.
This sparkling Cinderella tale provides the additional kick of watching the glass slipper crack through the glass ceiling.
The movie doesn't ask much of Lopez as an actress, but it understands her persona fairly well.
The story is so light and sugary that were it a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon, extra heavy-duty ropes would be needed to keep it from floating away.
Not terrible, but not memorable, Maid in Manhattan delivers what you'd expect: mediocre, get-out-your-hankies romantic fare.
The only suspense is whether Lopez' strapless ballgown or Fiennes' forced smile will drop first.
Honestly, at this point in Lopez's career I no longer expect her to marry or co-star with Latino men, but surely there are other White men J.Lo's core audience would enjoy fantasizing about.
Factory-made romantic comedy without an ounce of creativity or a shred of unpredictability.
Alternately politically correct and confusingly archaic, with a devastating lack of romantic connection between its two stars.
Maid in Manhattan may be instantly forgettable, but it works its magic while it lights up the screen.
Whoever thought that Lopez and Fiennes would spark the same frisson -- and box-office -- as Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in Pretty Woman was dreaming in Technicolor.
