Consensus: Too blandly generic, Maid in Manhattan also suffers from a lack of chemistry between Lopez and Fiennes.

In Revolution Studios' charming romantic comedy Maid in Manhattan, Jennifer Lopez stars as a hard-working, intelligent and determined single mother who dreams of a better life. While struggling as a housekeeper at Manhattan's first-class Beresford Hotel, she falls for a rising politician, who mistakenly assumes she's a socialite guest at the hotel.
Will a hotel worker from the Bronx and a well-heeled gentleman from midtown Manhattan risk it all for a chance at romance?
Marisa Ventura has made a good life for herself and her ten-year-old son, Ty (Tyler Garcia Posey), even if they don't have a lot of money. One Saturday morning Marisa brings Ty to the Beresford. She asks a co-worker to keep an eye on him for her while she and another maid, Stephanie (Marissa Matrone), attend to their chores. One of the hotel guests, a spoiled socialite, Caroline Lane (Natasha Richardson), asks Marisa to return some designer clothes for her. After Caroline leaves, Stephanie coaxes Marisa into trying them on before taking them back to the store. In an uncharacteristically frivolous moment, Marisa slips into the chic, expensive outfits.
Ty appears at the door with the handsome Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes), an aspiring U.S. Senator and one of Manhattan's most eligible bachelors. Ty has come to ask Marisa's permission to walk through Central Park with Christopher and his dog Rufus. Christopher is immediately attracted to Marisa. Assuming she is a hotel guest, he asks her to join them. She is about to refuse, but Stephanie intervenes and accepts for her.
Despite the obvious sparks between them, Marisa is reluctant to encourage Christopher, fearing she'll lose all that she's worked so hard to build. But he pursues her, even though it could compromise his political career.
As romance, mistaken identity and front-page gossip collide, Marisa and Christopher learn that the bigger your dreams, the better the chance they might come true.

Reviews for Maid in Manhattan
A Cinderella story so formulaic you'll be looking for a glass slipper.
[Lopez] is completely believable in the lead. She has a great instinct for picking roles she can embody, and she gives this one a special radiance, grace and dewy-eyed credibility.
The numerous faults and rather mediocre to bland execution of the story results in this effort turning back into a pumpkin without any chances at finding the right glass slipper fit.
Made-to-order for the singer-actress's target audience, preteen girls and their obliging moms.
Apart from the see-through script that is like a '30s society comedy dumbed down to I Am Sam's Maid, the film is most marked by the flagrant waste of talent.
Jennifer Lopez has star power, genuine talent and considerable assets, but she's wasted yet again in a grossly predictable romantic comedy.
Romantic comedies and date movies are rare this holiday season. So, if the mood strikes, Maid in Manhattan will probably satisfy it. But just barely.
A predictable Cinderella story in the Pretty Woman /Working Girl mold that is undone by a preposterous plot and its stars' complete lack of chemistry.
If you think that Jennifer Lopez has shown poor judgment in planning to marry Ben Affleck, wait till you see Maid in Manhattan.
In general the picture is so committed to inoffensiveness and to hammering home its uplifting, bootstrap message that it lacks the necessary element of malice.
It's harmless, diverting fluff. But it's hard to imagine a more generic effort in the genre.
As strenuously as it strives to make all the fake, standard promises to its target audience, Maid in Manhattan succeeds because, ultimately, performance wins out over formula.
So brisk is Wang's pacing that none of the excellent cast are given air to breathe.
Maybe this is why the movie isn't any good. Entertaining isn't its main function. It's designed to sell us a bill of goods.
These two are generating about as much chemistry as an Iraqi factory poised to receive a UN inspector.
