Consensus: Ponderous and overlong, The Majestic drowns in forced sentimentality and resembles a mish-mash of other, better films.

In THE MAJESTIC, Jim Carrey stretches his talents and proves that he can be a credible serious actor with his portrayal of Peter Appleton, a Hollywood B-movie screenwriter who is black listed during the McCarthy era. A car accident costs him his memory, and in the small coastal town where he ends up, he is mistaken for a local hero, presumed dead almost ten years ago in the war. Unable to recall anything of his "past" in the town, Appleton not only embraces his new identity, but becomes a pillar of the community, restoring hope that the residents lost along with many of their young men in World War II. In the process, he discovers new inspiration, new purpose, and a new life. Director Frank Darabont, true to form, tells a leisurely tale of a man's renewed faith in himself and in others. The film is an homage to old-fashioned values and proud-to-be-an-American patriotism, studded with rock-solid performances not just by Carrey, but by film veterans Martin Landau, Hal Holbrook, and Ron Rifkin, among others. Listen as well for cameo voice overs by Garry Marshall, Matt Damon, and Carl and Rob Reiner. [More]

Reviews for The Majestic
as full of corn as the frozen foods section of your local grocery. But still, something about this unapologetically hokey tale gets a hold of the heart.
That sound you hear is me -- still applauding Frank Darabont's nostalgic look at movies, patriotism, and the human condition.
A movie that can be described as cheesy, contrived and hopelessly predictable should not be rewarded, nor recommended. But I liked it anyway.
Built on a weak script that exploits nostalgia in an attempt to make you overlook an absurd plot...
No matter what Carrey does -- even if he finds a cure for cancer -- he will best be known for talking out of his ass. Crying shame.
It’s sincere about and with its intentions. This is a movie that comes from years of watching movies--made by movie-lovers for movie-lovers.
This skewed view of reality is one of the charms of a Capra kind of film, the kind of movie that sees the best in us.
A sweet little throwback that quite charmingly wears its large heart--and love of cinema--on its sleeve.
In a haze of generic nostalgia, The Majestic hammers home themes of patriotism and family values, all the while rewriting history for its own purposes.
Carrey gets the best role of his own career -- and plays it with tenderness, valor, bravery and deeply moving conviction. I find him positively captivating.
Up until the climax, The Majestic is a perfectly good film, with equal parts humor, whimsy and sweetness.
This self-promoting Hollywood film wants everyone to feel good about Hollywood...
