Ultimately, this movie is so sappy, every maple tree in the country will be green with envy.

Consensus: Ponderous and overlong, The Majestic drowns in forced sentimentality and resembles a mish-mash of other, better films.

In THE MAJESTIC, Jim Carrey stretches his talents and proves that he can be a credible serious actor with his portrayal of Peter Appleton, a Hollywood B-movie screenwriter who is black listed during the McCarthy era. A car accident costs him his memory, and in the small coastal town where he ends up, he is mistaken for a local hero, presumed dead almost ten years ago in the war. Unable to recall anything of his "past" in the town, Appleton not only embraces his new identity, but becomes a pillar of the community, restoring hope that the residents lost along with many of their young men in World War II. In the process, he discovers new inspiration, new purpose, and a new life. Director Frank Darabont, true to form, tells a leisurely tale of a man's renewed faith in himself and in others. The film is an homage to old-fashioned values and proud-to-be-an-American patriotism, studded with rock-solid performances not just by Carrey, but by film veterans Martin Landau, Hal Holbrook, and Ron Rifkin, among others. Listen as well for cameo voice overs by Garry Marshall, Matt Damon, and Carl and Rob Reiner. [More]

Reviews for The Majestic
Purposely painted with classic Hollywood movie form and color, this dramatically uneven production has its moments -- and they are not all Carrey's.
Sadly, because credibility takes a back seat to sentimentality, "The Majestic" comes up quite shy of its title.
A heartfelt and surprisingly successful revival of the cinema-idyllic world of Frank Capra movies.
I thought it could have been a little tighter, but I am recommending it.
For those craving a large helping of nostalgia with a topping of crowd-pleasing patriotism, there are few choices better than The Majestic.
Acting is good by the talented cast ... but the sentimentality is cheap and unworkable.
Overall, I liked it for its good-hearted message, its predictable yet cutesy story and its sentimentality.
The Majestic finds a presumptuous Darabont openly vying for Capra cred and, well, succeeding.
Director Frank Darabont ... tries to recapture the sentimental, patriotic films of Frank Capra proving once and for all that you can't go home again.
Drastically pales in comparison to its two predecessors [The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
A celluloid fantasy that breathes no life it doesn't borrow from other movies.
The sort of film that will have moviegoers who like to be challenged rather than manipulated groaning, and hopping mad that it’s dragged out over two and a half hours.
“The Majestic” shares a double layer of meaning because it is as much about the movies and the role they play in our lives as it is about the characters and the story.
