Trailer Bulletin: Exclusive "Into the Wild;" Plus, "Margot at the Wedding"
by RT Staff | June 21, 2007
Discuss Article
In his first narrative feature since the 2001's totally solid "The Pledge," Sean Penn has directed "Into the Wild," an adaptation of Jon Krakauer's book about a young and restless wayfarer. Paramount Vantage is releasing it this fall, and they've given the IGN network the exclusive trailer.

Starring Emile Hirsch as Christopher McCandless, "Into the Wild" recounts McCandless' story of ditching the family and lighting out for the Alaskan wilderness. At one point in the trailer, Vince Vaughn shows up as a friendly kook in a bar. "Into the Wild" is essentially a survival movie, mixed with some beat soul-searching and that patented smoldering angst expected from something Sean Penn-related. Don't expect a super fun happy ending.

I also can't resist adding that another Paramount Vantage flick, "Margot at the Wedding," had its trailer debut today. It's the newest film from writer-director Noah Baumbach, and everything about it seemed like some fey Wes Anderson/Eric Rohmer mash-up.

Then I remembered I'm a sucker for everything Anderson and Rohmer, and this delightful trailer has won me over with its choice music selections, natural acting and dialogue, and a well-sampled Jack Black. It's always initially weird to hear about Jack Black in a more serious role. But, once again, here he is, not making faces or overworking his eyebrow muscles and it does looks like the role's going to work out. You can check out the trailer at ComingSoon.net.

"Into the Wild" comes out this fall. Check out the trailer here. And it's October 19 for "Margot."

Margot looks pretty good, into the wild looks kind of cheesy, plus, I read the book, which was decent but I dont see it as a movie.

Never really liked Sean Penn, but Into the Wild looks great. So does Margot. Can't wait for both.

Awesome book! We can't wait to see this movie. We read the book ages ago and still talk about it. Very compelling story!

I haven't read the book for this, but I think it should be an interesting movie based on the trailer (if you like those finding yourself/outdoorsy movies). I checked out the Into The Wild website after seeing this news, and I'm excited to see Marcia Gay Harden is in it. Not sure exactly what kind of role Vince Vaughn will play- I think if he was the funny boy it owuld seem a little out of place in the movie. Does anyone who read the book know what this character is like?

I caught both films, Wild and Margot, this weekend at Telluride. I encourage you to skip Margot if it makes it to theatres after the poor feedback from this past weekend. While well acted, the plot and story were greatly lacking. Jack Black did a wonderful job, however his role was not large enough to warrant sitting through this film. Into the Wild was absolutely fantastic. Story, scenery, acting, and soundtrack all came together to create a wonderful, entertaining, and eye-opening film. I could certainly see this film going for screenplay adaptation, actor (Emile Hirsch does a great job), director, and/or picture.
