Box Office Guru Wrapup: Max feels no Payne at No. 1
Summary
With the elections just a few weeks away, W. seemed ready to rule the box office this weekend, but it was Fox's weekend to break out of its slump, with two of its openers finding their way into the top 5, including Max Payne to lead them all. Back to Article

ledawg1138 writes: on Oct 19 2008 08:08 PM Sad that Max Payne is number one. The Secret Life of Bees looks so lame, but I'm giving it kudo's for coming in three. To bad about W., my parents saw it and liked it. Kind of boring weekend... again! Oh, and Indy 4 is a 1,000 times better than Blade Runner. Blade Runner is bad bad bad! And Indy 4... vashfanatic writes: on Oct 19 2008 08:25 PM In reply to this comment (#2085007) What on earth prompted the bash on Blade Runner? ...which, btw, is a masterpiece, even when not compared to the average-ness of Indy 4. Seriously, have you only seen the lousy theater release version or something? That movie is brilliant! I do agree that the movie scene this year (with a few exceptions) has been pretty dismal. Someone put the Chihuahua to sleep already! (Reply to this) |

thereign writes: on Oct 19 2008 08:36 PM WTF is up with Beverly Hills Chihuahua still being in the top 10, and #2 at that??!!! I was joking a while back, saying BHC would surprise us all and overtake The Dark Knight to finally beat Titanic and become the biggest moneymaker of all time. This is looking to become the potential fulfillment of a terrifying prophecy, which will shunt us all into some strange Bizarro alternate universe. Weird.... (Reply to this) |

bwozar07 writes: on Oct 19 2008 08:38 PM Brolin was really great in W. but the movie, um..., wasn't. I imagine if Max Payne was any good at all, or at least not as completely terrible as the reviews make it sound, it would have come in much stronger, like over 30 million sort of strong. Also I can't be the only one that thinks those stupid flying dark angel things ruin the atmosphere what was otherwise a pretty great trailer, can I? (Reply to this) |

ledawg1138 writes: on Oct 19 2008 08:40 PM The Blade Runner comment didn't come out of no where. It's continued from the Weekly Ketchup page. And I mean what I say. But, yeah, seriously BHC needs to go away now. (Reply to this) |

jokerboy1991 writes: on Oct 19 2008 08:46 PM In reply to this comment (#2085007) Yeah why bring up Blade Runner, by the way if someone said that to me in person then they better start running considering how amazing the final cut of Blade Runner is. I thought W was pretty good but very sloppy and I really wished they didn't rush it because it could have been great, I bet there will be a Director's Cut because in ads for it I see clips of BUSH in the National Guard which were scenes I really wanted too see and would have filled in one of the many gaps that made it feel choppy. Man I hate FOX, another awesome video game ruined I hear, well I will wait to rent it. Also maybe I am wrong but am I the only one that thinks that AUSTRALIA might tank?!? I mean it will be playing towards the TITANIC tween girls but they will be too busy blushing over TWILIGHT (yuk) and it is definitely not a guy movie, and I personally cant tell whether it looks great or really soapy, I will probably see it though because I like Hugh Jackman. I hope THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD tanks, I love the original and it looks like they made it into a crappy action movie with Keanu "WHOH" Reeves, maybe too harsh, I like Reeves but the movie looks like crap. I will end up renting The Express which I hear is good and Sex Drive which I hear is funny but to me it looks like a rental. I bet MAX PAYNE dives huge next week while all the guys will be seeing going to see SAW V because they think it is entertaining to see people tortured for 2 hours... I cant wait for Charlie Kaufman's movie next weekend, it looks so great! (Reply to this) |

jokerboy1991 writes: on Oct 19 2008 08:50 PM In reply to this comment (#2085039) See it, it is pretty good. Brolin is great, most of the cast is great especially Richard Dreyfuss, but I wasn't impressed by Thandie Newton. The movies problems suffer from pacing problems, it is just really chop, it feels like a rough cut taped together at times. I needs a bit more work, I bet there will be a Director's Cut that will be great though. Its a solid movie. (Reply to this) |

jokerboy1991 writes: on Oct 19 2008 08:51 PM In reply to this comment (#2085039) Also it did good for an opening weekend, it will definitely get its budget and some. I think it will be a sleeper success. (Reply to this) |

ledawg1138 writes: on Oct 19 2008 08:57 PM I haven't seen the Final Cut jokerboy. I doubt it will make a difference. And I'm continuing an argument from the Weekly Ketchup, and if I hear someone dosen't like Indy 4, and tells me in person, I'm the same as you with BR: TFC. And apparently there's a chunk of people I'd get into fights with. Hmmmm... maybe I'll just lay off. I'd see "The Day the Earth Stood Still" remake. It might be great like "King Kong" (2005) or bad like "War of the Worlds"-(2005). Hey stick to your opinion! (Reply to this) |

I agree with ledawg about BR, not a bad movie just a weak story that doesnt develop much(and the final cut is the one I seen). The chiarman of Fox schould be fired for giving the studio there worst year ever. Thier Summer lineup was a bust, Aulstralia looks like crap, DTESS looks like an average run of the mill alien movie and Wolverine is gonna be thier only good film next year. Ive never seen a studio make so many bad choice's in such a little time frame. (Reply to this) |

I don't like South Park very much, but I like that Indiana Jones episode a little, even though I like the movie. Now, I just had to state my opinion. Matanuki writes: on Oct 20 2008 11:12 AM In reply to this comment (#2085964) Well, ledawg. Seems we agree on at least one more thing, High School Musical is a shock to the senses in all the wrong ways. However, I'd attribute your strange need to carry on in so trolly a fashion to your teenager status if that weren't a completely unfair insult to teenagers everywhere. Word to the wise, you won't make many friends on here with the needless trolling, playful, 'friendly' in your approach or otherwise. And, I promise you, no movie buff with a bit culture or a sense of aesthetics will ever agree that Blade Runner is anywhere near as "horrible" a film as you say it is. I'll submit, there is a difference between films and movies. Blade Runner, for instance, is a film. Transformers, which you've expressed a great deal of love for on the other thread, is a movie. Add your Indy 4 to the latter. I'll bet you an arm, a leg, and a large bucket of popcorn that by the time you're an adult, both these favorites of yours will have depreciated significantly in value -like is the fate of all barely passable popcorn fare- and will have moved down in the ranks of noteworthy cinema. P.S. No one, really, has to ignore you. Because on here, obnoxious trolls eventually get banned. If that's your ultimate goal, then you're well on your way to achieving success. (Reply to this) |

chasetinnell writes: on Oct 20 2008 11:56 AM ledawg blade runner is completley a different movie than indy 4, which by the way was entertaining, but so far behind the original trilogy. Sputnik99 writes: on Oct 20 2008 01:27 PM Before I comment, I'd like to point out that I haven't been a teen-ager for a very long time. The only version of Blade Runner that I have ever seen is the Director's Cut, and I have seen it multiple times. Every one, everywhere kept telling me that it was a masterpiece of flimmaking and that I should love it. So I watched it again...and again...and again... I think you can tell where this is going. Blade Runner, to me, was a very boring, cheesy and completely unwatchable movie. And I've seen it more than once. Seen only the Director's Cut. And I never got a taste for it. So if someone doesn't like Blade Runner, that doesn't mean thay lack any ability to recognize artistic value. It just means it wasn't up to their taste. It certainly isn't what I like. P.S. Indy 4 was garbage. I've said that before, I say it again. (Reply to this) |

ledawg1138 writes: on Oct 20 2008 02:16 PM I never said Blade Runner was horrible. Just dissapointing. It's a visual masterpiece. Nothing else. I'm done. (Reply to this) |

Tragic writes: on Oct 20 2008 03:44 PM Anyone's opinion has some merit if they can present it reasonably and hopefully back it up a bit. ledawg is somewhat lacking in this but I'm sure he'll grow into it. Any cut of BladeRunner is wonderful I think, if just for the artistry and Rutger Hauer's soliloquoy (sp?) Max Payne's director and studio cheesed out in groveling for a pg13 rating. I think it might have done better business going for the gusto with an R. Indy 4 was pretty weak I thought, just too far-fetched with little substance. "Quarantine" is the best flick currently playing, intense. (Reply to this) |
|
tomwaitsjr writes: on Oct 20 2008 04:44 PM I don't think the director of Max Payne groveled for the PG-13 rating. He complained about it in regards to what was allowed in The Dark Knight. I have a feeling the UR director's version of Max Payne will be much more enjoyable than the theatrical release. Then again, I could be wrong. Then again, Mila Kunis firing a machine gun is always right. (Reply to this) |

Matanuki writes: on Oct 21 2008 08:59 AM In reply to this comment (#2086587) It's cool, ledawg. There is a consistency, I think, to what both Tragic and I are saying. You are welcome to your opinion, and encouraged to present it without apology. But, doing so in a 'trolly' fashion, whether everyone agrees with you or not, deflates whatever substance your argument might otherwise offer to the discussion. I don't know what's gonna happen with Transformers 2. I want it to be good. But I promise you, Transformers 1 will not age well. The movie lacked the substance and sci fi edge that would have made it great, that would have made it a film, that would have made it an instant classic the sort that appreciates in value overtime like the finest wine. We perhaps know this because we're older, and remember some of the stupid sh.it we liked when we were teenagers against some of the other things we still unflinchingly like today as carved-out-of-the-wood adults. Jesus. See what you've done! You got me in classroom teacher mode. ;-) (Reply to this) |

Matanuki writes: on Oct 21 2008 09:40 AM In reply to this comment (#2087643) Dig it though, man. It could have had a great deal of substance. Doesn't matter what it was based on. Where there's mythology, there's potential. And Transformers, toys, cartoon, comic, whatever origin one cares to endorse or offer loyalties, is replete with fodder for great sci fi fare. Problem is, Michael "I'm not doing that stupid toy movie" didn't see it. All he saw was a summer blockbuster full of opportunities to blow sh.it up and make love to Megan Fox with the camera. Neither of which, in and of themselves, a problem per se. But add those ingredients into a stew of sci fi and richly developed mythology and, like magic, you got an epic Transformers franchise worthy of rivaling something as revered as Star Wars or, dare I say, Dune. But maybe I'm just crazy. It's been suggested, after all. But what is a storyteller without a little crazy in him? Michael Bay could use a little crazy, and perhaps a little less ego. I can't in good faith blame the writers. These are the same guys writing Fringe. And that show rocks so far. (Reply to this) |

Matanuki writes: on Oct 22 2008 06:39 PM In reply to this comment (#2089232) lol. I feel ya, bro. And I didn't expect 'Citizen Kane' either. But still, so much more can be achieved with that franchise. I guess we'll see if they up the epic anti in the sequel. Despite my disappointment, I remain cautiously hopeful. By the way, you're new to this Transformers discussion. I've been bitchin' about the treatment of Jazz since the beginning. Some, I'm sure, are tired of it. lol. (Reply to this) |

astrangefish writes: on Oct 23 2008 09:16 AM Matanuki, 'Quarantine' is an utterly pointless english-language remake of a very recent far superior spanish film called 'rec'. Matanuki writes: on Oct 23 2008 01:40 PM In reply to this comment (#2091004) Thanks, dude. But ya know, I wasn't all that impressed by the trailers for 'Quarantine' anyway. Seemed like the same old same old. Kinda sick of the tired zombie films anyway. Did you see 'Invasion'? Underrated, I think. I finally saw it on HBO a few weeks ago and was surprised since I expected to totally hate it. But it was good, and very interesting in an allegorical sense of the word. lol. I just noticed that I misspelled 'sigh' above. :-/ As for Transformers, I'm glad I'm not alone in these thoughts. It could be so much more. I won't even pay to see the sequel if 1. Wheeljack isn't it it, 2. Jazz doesn't come back, and 3. I'm not impressed by the synopsis. Ledawg, of course Megatron is coming back. If he doesn't that will be yet another bad decision made. It would be interesting though if he doesn't return for this sequel, but is instead revived at the end after a tour of great destruction (Empire Strikes Back style) and set up for supremacy in the third film. I must admit that I'm interested in at least four rumored possibilities: Prowl being brought into the story, the villain 'Fallen' making an appearance, the Constructicons being introduced, and Jetfire as an SR-71 blackbird.
