Three well-known folk groups come together for a reunion concert in New York City, singing brilliantly funny songs and producing uniquely bizarre laughs along the way. The Folksmen are an all-male trio consisting of an upright bass, a banjo, a guitar, and a whole lot of melody. Hilarious scenes of the group rehearsing casually in the kitchen, while reflecting on bygone days, are some of the most candidly funny moments in the film. Fake archival photos of the band, combined with the names of their hit songs--"Hitchin'", Singin'", "Ramblin'", "Wishin'", and "Pickin'"--generate wonderfully dry jokes. When not peering in on the Folksmen, the film spends time getting to know Mitch and Mickey, a popular duo and a great folk love story. Mitch and Mickey talk openly about the emotional torment of their breakup, though it is clearly difficult for them. However, back together again, they manage to rehearse--and perform--their famous love song that requires a dramatic kiss in the middle. Last but not least are The New Main Street Singers, a raucous group of nine--a neuftette--that wear matching outfits and sing upbeat songs. Some of the more bizarre personalities in the film come out of this group, bringing a tone to this folk odyssey that recalls moments from Guest's BEST IN SHOW and WAITING FOR GUFFMAN. A hollerin' good time, A MIGHTY WIND is yet another comic masterpiece from Guest, whose films resonate with viewers long after they're through, and easily lend themselves to repeat viewings. [More]

The most memorable moment is not a gag but a kiss, which -- surprisingly -- proves to be as sweet, moving and heartbreaking as any smooch seen onscreen in ages.

It's not that A Mighty Wind isn't funny. It is. But it's also amazingly insubstantial. Five minutes after it's over, it begins to evaporate. And it doesn't help that Wind breaks (oh, come on, you couldn't have resisted either) no new ground.

There is no more exact statement of Hippie Sell-Out than folk songs being used to sell constipation relief.

If you’re going for a textbook “good” movie, this isn’t it. But... I sure laughed a lot. And these days, that’s good enough for me.

Guest and company can always entertain, but they’re even better at doing much, much more.

The movie manages to be satiric and affectionate at the same time.

A picture with moments of singular lunacy but overall regrettably little bite.

Deftly mixes equal parts hilarity, poignancy, and lively hootenanny gusto.

The predictably skimpy plot is only the skeleton upon which the talented core group of players can lay their fleshy and muscular comedy.

A Mighty Wind succeeds at being witty and sincere like all of Guest's and Co's. previous efforts. This time, however, there is a layer of humanity on the power of innocence that makes this film unique.

The characters in A Mighty Wind are annoying, petty, pathetic, neurotic… and downright charming.

A Mighty Wind doesn’t blow. But it fails to conjure the type of comedic hurricane that fans of Guest anticipate.

It allows for a little tenderness blended in amidst the outrageous non-sequiturs and gut-busting one-liners. It is a film with heart as well as wit.

Not quite what it could have been, but it features enough priceless moments and catchy music to be well worth seeing.

We expect sly acting and clever writing from Guest and company. But the big surprise here is the quality of the songwriting and musicianship.

Most of this film feels as if we've seen it before, and that's because we have. But this cast is marvelous to be around, as always.
