Despite the snags, De Palma remains a virtuoso puppet-master, pulling the strings taut in a nail-biting robbery sequence, switching from micro to macro with Hitchcockian panache, and finally letting rip with a hell-for-leather climax.

An incredibly boring and confusing espionage thriller...So inept on so many levels that it could easily be called The Bonfire of the Secret Agents.
Great start, but the movie keeps fighting its own internal logic.

This movie isn't a disaster, but, all things considered, there's little reason to make it a high priority for theatrical viewing.
Every effect is so calculated that only the conscious minds of filmmakers and viewers are engaged--and not by very much or for very long.
Not so much noir as it is flat
The title makes promises that the script cannot fulfill. There are better spy films that have come and gone with far less fanfare.
It's the worst kind of convoluted thriller -- it can never unravel satisfactorily because there's nothing simple at its center, just more confusion.
An infinite trailer that is all effects, no affect.

Unfortunately, two scenes and a screwed up script, plus a big plot disappointment, do not a recommendation make.
The film is full of cockeyed angles, extreme close-ups, flashbacks and slow-motion, as DePalma tries to create the illusion that somewhere buried in all the busy detail of plot, something is actually at stake in Mission: Impossible.
The film is painful in at least one way - its waste of good actors.
A mission gone awry, prompting you to hope that reruns of its television incarnation will pop up on cable soon.
