Exclusive Trailer: Supermarket Scares in Stephen King's The Mist
Thomas Jane gets lost in the supermarket in the new Stephen King horror flick.
by Alex Vo | November 05, 2007
Discuss Article
What'd be worse than a stopover in a town that's been fogged over like Silent Hill? How about spending those nights with a few crazed evangelists? That's half the premise to Stephen King's The Mist, the new horror flick/lengthy religious debate from director Frank Darabont, and Rotten Tomatoes has picked up the latest exclusive trailer.

In this adaptation of the Stephen King novella (you can find it in the Skeleton Crew anthology), Thomas Jane stars as David Drayton, a father trapped in a supermarket by an otherworldly mist that has enveloped his entire town. When creatures from the mist start attacking, some believe the monster carry with them a less-than-friendly message from God.

Not much new is shown in the latest trailer that we didn't already see in the previous trailers. Which means that if you haven't already read or seen anything from The Mist yet, here's the best place to start. It features everything you need to know: Jane debating with people of the nature of the fog and its origin (botched military experiments strike again!), and with quick cuts of bugs crashing through windows and people being snatched out of the supermarket.

Director Darabont is no stranger to the works of Stephen King, having previously scripted and directed The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption to obviously great effect.

The Mist will creep into theaters November 21. Click here to check out the latest trailer ("Trailer #3").

This movie looks great. Hopefully it will redeem Mr. Darabont after The Majestic. *shudders*

Just what we need another movie about christian fanatics. How would the news take it if we made it about a bunch of fanatic jews, muslims, or liberal atheists?
Offensive? Well look at that preview, pretend you're a Christian, and step into my world.
I am not saying it doesn't look scary. I know all of you are going to say that I misunderstood the point of the book. Yes, it is about fanaticism and manipulation of our holy texts(that's at least what the director or Stephen King will tell you, so they can sell tickets, but hmmm...what are they really saying?). Do we get radical atheists, fanatic jews, or fanatic Muslims as "soulless evil bad guys" in our movies?

The reason it's christians is because they are the most influential in our society and hell even the world. They do make movies about fanatical muslims btw, look at any movie about terrorism. They don't really touch on the jews that much, but you occasionaly get the ridiculous jewish mother with the heavy accent.... Uh, atheists, there's not enough of them to do so, and it's kind of hard to put into context. You could say any crazy dude that isn't spouting out religous quotes is a fanatical atheist.

I don't want to offend either but I personally think that Christians are the ones that are doing the most harm right now to our society (United States). This is coming from a catholic. So it makes sense that these movies will pop up.

Just go watch an action movie from the 80's or 90's and you'll have your ridiculously souless evil Muslim (and Russian Communist) fanatics. Quit whining and just don't watch the film, your brethren will be right beside you in between boycotting the Golden Compass and whatever other movie you feel denigrates Christianity by way of science fiction and fantasy.

You should feel lucky, Muslims and Russians don't ever get this kind of treatment, all they ever get is the over the top terrorist treatment. You know, the ones spouting praise in Arabic right before blowing everything up. I wish just once there would be a Muslim fanatic in one of these cool films not those boring self important pieces of trash being killed by Segal or Schwarzeneggar.

Then again I prefer the reality that is Executive Decision and The Siege to The Mist any day.

Fanatical (well maybe not fanatical) Christians also do a lot of good between you and me. We just get all of these loud religious morons on television spouting complete nonsense, whereas the status quo is pretty much ashamed of them. Personally, I think they should get there come uppance. It is the same with Muslims, everyone thinks they are all fanatics when actually most of them just want to be left alone and have their land, holy land or not. The leaders manipulate the fanaticism for their causes. But I still get annoyed when I see a movie that will be perceived as anti-Christian by at least 50% of the movie going public, who are going to associate the Bible as something wrong (which if used the wrong way, mainly the Old Testament) instead of a good thing(the New Testament).

Don't ever get this kind of treatment? Well things have changed buddy. Hollywood is actually giving everyone the good kind of treatment except Christians. The bad guys are either Christians or Neo-Nazis.

EmmG389, don't forget this movie is being done by Mr. Darabont - The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption are loved by Christian groups, both are riddled with religious allegory. I was actually made to watch them in a religous studies class back at school.

So.. I certainly don't think Frank is using this as an attack on fanatical Christians. I think he just likes Stephen King's works.

why the christian bashing? jee i don't know, because EVERYTIME any kind of movie that comes out HINTS at anything religious...you tw2ts always come out in droves praising or bashing the movie. besides, i've been around christian crazies enough to know they don't think clearly and if it came to what the trailer hinted(sacrifice the boy!) they would do it in a heartbeat. makes it THAT much scarier to me. you can tell me "not all christians are like that" but the VAST majority i've been around...are. if YOU'RE not like that, fine. but i'd say at least 90% of the ones i've known...are missing a screw or two. just makes the movie that much more realistic...

this flick looks decent, i'm just not sure cuz the last time i saw it...it was called the Fog...

Acually, we do - it's just that you don't care enough to notice because you're too busy being offended when anything that could be percieved as remotely anti-Christian pops up. You're not special. Everybody has to deal with this kind of treatment.

Can't see this movie. Ever ever ever.

I was dumb enough to read the story while spending a week at the lake. Scared the bejesus out of me. One of those stories where Stephen King was absolutely ruthless. And just from what I can tell from the commercials, I can tell Darabont is spot on. Exactly as I pictured it. Gives me chills.

I could watch every Hitchcock, Wes Craven, Clive Barker, Cronenberg movie ever made and not lose a wink of sleep. Even if it was a letdown, this movie would have me barricading the door and sleeping with the lights on.

This movie wouldn't be as appealing to me if Frank Darabont wasn't behind it. Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile are amazing movies. I'm hoping for this to be his third great Stphen King adaptation.

The Movie looks cool. But usually Stephen King movis blow.

As for crazy-*** Christians. Hell why not? I'm not from the States but when you see movies like Jesus Camp and hear US voices on radio networks in Australia Crapping on about the Lord and God old G Bush, it's hard not to think that something is terribly wrong over there. It seems to be spreading over here to like some kind of ****ty crap tornado!
I do feel sorry for you normal US citizens, I know you are still in the majority you poor bastards!

This Christian arguments so stupid. Look guys, this movie has been based off a book. The director didnt go around looking for a book that has some anti-Christian message in it and go "I wanna make a movie of that". And besides, they're trapped in a supermarket. What else in North America could they have done?

As for the movie itself, it looks decent. I loved the short story, but i don't think it's blockbuster material. But then again, how many Stephen King adaptations are? We'll just have to wait and see

Yeah the Christian arguements are dumb since i am a Christian and could care less. I think that people need to get a thick skin and stop crying over dumb ****, ITS ONLY A MOVIE. There are so many different sects of Christianity with so many different beliefs that it is impossible to categorize the people in the movie. What this movie reminds me of is The Crucible and the Salem Witch Trials. All those crazy people killing others like cultists. It is those wack jobs that scare me and will make this movie cool, like the mom in the movie Carrie.

The reason I want to see it is because I like movies with trapped and desperate people (with or without guns), fighting creatures/undead/monsters in a apocalyptic/post apocalyptic world, (no matter how bad it is)

The film looks promising for its genre -- it's kinda hard to come up with new themes and/or ideas to explore in "barricaded survivors vs. monster(s)" type films. While the concept of social division in disaster situations has been examined before it's always interesting to see what new approach a film maker/author will take.

As for the representation of fundamentalist Christians in it...I am by far not a fan of Christian fundamentalism or for that matter any other type of religious fundamentalism, however I can sympathize with EmmG389 to some extent. At least from what we see in the trailer the principle "Christian fundamentalist" seems rather like a simple caricature -- a strawman if you will, made to present a position whose only purpose is to be easily deconstructed and negated. I think the film might be better if the audience is forced to wrestle over empathizing with equally compelling factions.

As for films about fanatical Muslims, Jews and Liberal atheists? I don't know where EmmG389 has been: Hollywood film is replete, if not saturated with representations of fanaticism on the part of these groups. I find the Christian persecution complex rather interesting. For all intents and purposes they represent the biggest power bloc within American civil and political society, and yet continually complain that they're not getting a fair shake when represented on film in the same manner that other groups often are.
