Though it may seem as if the conservationist movement has been around forever, its modern incarnation can be traced back to one man, David Brower. When Brower saw the Yosemite Valley for the first time as a young man, he decided to devote himself to preserving the natural beauty of America. A close friendship with photographer Ansel Adams helped Brower solidify his mission, making the US government's rampant development of natural lands the focus of his fight. As he stepped into the role of executive director of John Muir's pioneering Sierra Club in 1952, Brower became a true political force on behalf of America's natural treasures. Kelly Duane's MONUMENTAL provides a heroic portrait of an honest man willing to go head-to-head with anyone who dared put profit over protection of the wild lands he loved so much. Personal stories about Brower are told by his children, Ken and Barbara. And the film also includes interviews with former Interior Secretary Stewart Udall, and political enemy Floyd Dominy--who lobbied to created a manmade lake in the Grand Canyon. Most extraordinary of all, though, is the copious, often-breathtaking home movie footage taken by Brower between the 1930s and '60s while enjoying the mountains, canyons, and forests to which he devoted his life. The rollicking alt-country soundtrack features songs by Yo La Tengo, The Beechwood Sparks, Fruit Bats, Hayden, American Music Club, American Analog Set, and more. [More]

Reviews for Monumental: David Brower's Fight for Wild America
A forceful documentary about the first executive director of the Sierra Club who was also a first-rate environmental crusader.
[A] memorable portrait of one man's immeasurable passion for preservation.
Kelly Duane's documentary attempts to shed some light on a worthy subject, but does so only fractionally, resulting in a less-than-comprehensive portrait.
You'll be wondering why you're sitting passively in a darkened theater, rather than scaling a cliff or rafting down a river.
Kelly Duane's mediocre documentary squanders a terrific subject: pioneering conservationist David Brower's transformation of the Sierra Club from a hiker's association to a groundbreaking force in the American environmental movement.
By the time the closing credits roll, you'll be ready to run out and hug a tree.
Its rather pedestrian presentation of facts and an overreliance on title cards leaves Monumental feeling inspirational for sure -- but not so earth-shattering.
In an age where constructing papier-maché caricatures of world leaders is considered activism, it's revealing to see a documentary where an idealist actually engages government and effects positive change.
Combines home movies and interviews with Brower's children and political opponents to create an intriguing portrait of a man determined to protect nature by any means necessary.
The film makes a very strong case that Brower was 'the greatest conservationist of the 20th century.'
Makes a good argument that Brower's story and the history of the 20th century environmental activism are synonymous.
A feast of nourishing images -- as well as a persuasive reminder of what exactly environmentalists are fighting for.
