Consensus: Though the story feels rather contrived, Moonlight Mile is redeemed by the good performances of its cast.

Joe (Gyllenhaal) is grieving over the death of his fiancee, Diana, and is living with her parents, Ben (Hoffman) and JoJo (Sarandon). Though Joe just wants to do what's right, he openly admits that he has no plan, no answers, and needs time to sort things out. Meanwhile, Ben and JoJo cling to him as their only hope after losing their daughter, and the rest of the world expects him to bounce back into dating without a moment's pause. Joe's awkwardness and unquenchable efforts to be helpful provide for some touching and softly comedic moments. The New England setting of the film, the '60s cars and clothes, and the excellent soundtrack (Sly & The Family Stone, T-Rex, Bob Dylan) provide enough atmosphere to move this emotional story right along. But it isn't until Joe meets another woman (Ellen Pompeo), who also lost someone she loved, that he regains hope and begins to be true to himself and to the people around him. [More]

An honestly intimate and genuinely funny account of bereavement.

Moonlight Mile makes you realize how much Dustin Hoffman's presence on the big screen has been missed the past few years.

Moonlight Mile treats grief like a new product on the Home Shopping Network, wrapping it in bright packaging, giving it a snappy catchphrase and offering a special deal that's good only for the next two hours.

Moonlight Mile is not a great film, but it is a film that aspires to greatness, that is tripped up only by the limits of the human beings striving to do something as well as it can possibly be done.

An awfully good, achingly human picture.

The first half of Moonlight Mile feels like the runaway trailer for a movie that can't wait to jerk your tears. But to quote Joe in a moment of epiphany, there's a 'truth enema' out there, and, boy, it really brings this movie around.

Moonlight Mile feels authentic--in its grief, its hope, its eradicable sorrow and its outreach for happiness in the face of despair.

Inside Moonlight Mile, an honest and heartbreakingly true movie is struggling to get out.

Moonlight Mile gives itself the freedom to feel contradictory things. It is sentimental but feels free to offend, is analytical and then surrenders to the illogic of its characters, is about grief and yet permits laughter.
