I suspect that it will find a place in the heart of anyone who has lost and gone on to live and love again… or at least those who are willing to open themselves up to that emotional ride.
Moonlight Mile makes you realize how much Dustin Hoffman's presence on the big screen has been missed the past few years.
The net is cast far too widely. The question begins to beat around in your head. "What does this movie want to be?"

Top CriticIt's hard to imagine anyone managing to steal a movie not only from charismatic rising star Jake Gyllenhaal but also from accomplished Oscar winners Susan Sarandon, Dustin Hoffman and Holly Hunter, yet newcomer Ellen Pompeo pulls off the feat with aplomb.
I believe Silberling had the best intentions here, but he just doesn’t have the restraint to fully realize them.
Jack Gyllenhaal's intelligent performance doesn't save this film from being a tidy pile of melodramatic mush, but it at least makes it watchable.

[Silberling] mostly succeeded in crafting an off-beat, uncomfortable (but in all the right ways), and genuinely funny and moving story out of this Movie of the Week material.
'Moonlight Mile' is a gentle film about loss.
Sarandon is terrific as the bereaved mother who defiantly refuses to be handled or comforted.
Grief is awkward and funny and strange sometimes. So is Moonlight Mile.
While acknowledging the possibility of growth after tragedy, [it's] so comfortable with the positive that the would-be emotional moments are telegraphed and phony.
Diverting entertainment, not exactly unpredictable, but comfortable as an old shoe.
The movie is like a series of vague cliff notes, teasing a much greater story without actually capturing emotion or perspective.
