A mix of tragedy and humor interests us in Moonlight Mile for a while, but interest turns to annoyance when we realize there's no substance to back it up.

Consensus: Though the story feels rather contrived, Moonlight Mile is redeemed by the good performances of its cast.

Joe (Gyllenhaal) is grieving over the death of his fiancee, Diana, and is living with her parents, Ben (Hoffman) and JoJo (Sarandon). Though Joe just wants to do what's right, he openly admits that he has no plan, no answers, and needs time to sort things out. Meanwhile, Ben and JoJo cling to him as their only hope after losing their daughter, and the rest of the world expects him to bounce back into dating without a moment's pause. Joe's awkwardness and unquenchable efforts to be helpful provide for some touching and softly comedic moments. The New England setting of the film, the '60s cars and clothes, and the excellent soundtrack (Sly & The Family Stone, T-Rex, Bob Dylan) provide enough atmosphere to move this emotional story right along. But it isn't until Joe meets another woman (Ellen Pompeo), who also lost someone she loved, that he regains hope and begins to be true to himself and to the people around him. [More]

Reviews for Moonlight Mile
Feels like one of those contrived, only-in -Hollywood productions where name actors deliver big performances created for the sole purpose of generating Oscar talk.
This wonderful piece of work should bring a tear to your eye, a lump to your throat and ultimately a smile to your face in the end.
However sincere and heartfelt its intent, Moonlight Mile remains very much a contraption.
In Brad Silberling's Moonlight Mile, grief is presented with a unique spin -- realistically confused and with an honest dose of humor, right from the start.
Films about loss, grief and recovery are pretty valuable these days. Seen in that light, Moonlight Mile should strike a nerve in many.
Despite all the expert acting that goes into it, Moonlight Mile finally becomes a militantly soulful exercise. It makes even the most sensitive, tenderhearted viewer feel somehow inadequate. That's not a good feeling.
While it is not autobiographical in the strict sense, it is so obviously heartfelt and personally observed that we feel almost as liberated and relieved as Silberling must have felt as this story came pouring out.
A character-driven, surprisingly thoughtful film, which, in spite of its contrivances, somehow feels more real and heartfelt than all the pre-fab, shallow, heartless films Hollywood has been producing.
The first half of Moonlight Mile feels like the runaway trailer for a movie that can't wait to jerk your tears. But to quote Joe in a moment of epiphany, there's a 'truth enema' out there, and, boy, it really brings this movie around.
Good grief requires consistently great writing. “Moonlight Mile” falls too many yards short.
A series of scenes that play false dramatically but ring true emotionally.
Like its New England characters, most of whom wander about in thick clouds of denial, the movie eventually gets around to its real emotional business, striking deep chords of sadness.
