Martina Gedeck stars as Martha, whose obsession with precision gourmet cooking extends to discussing recipes with her bewildered therapist (August Zirner) and verbally attacking anyone at the restaurant who attempts to send her food back. When she's forced to expand her life to include Lina, her hermetic world begins to crumble. Sullen, despondent, and--worst of all--refusing to eat, Lina proves herself more than a match for Martha's iron will. Enter a boisterous, life-embracing Italian chef (Sergio Castellitto) who's been hired at the restaurant without Martha's consent, and the table is set. Sparks fly, personalities clash, and simmering, repressed emotions come bubbling to the frothy surface. Though perhaps not the most original recipe, the acting here is as impeccable as the cooking, and the cinematography, by longtime Nettlebeck-collaborator Michael Bertl, infuses the food and locales with glistening, sumptuous warmth. Reviews for Mostly Martha
Closely tracking in the footsteps of dramatic food flicks like Big Night, this movie is a little different in that it lives up to its moniker.
A sort of light celluloid snack, easy to swallow but not really nourishing.
This is a film that tells us absolutely nothing new about the problems that face us and is shamelessly hedonistic about the obsession with preparing gourmet food of the protagonist, Martha Klein. But it is still delightful.
If Mostly Martha is mostly unsurprising, it's still a sweet, even delectable diversion.
If you're like me, a sucker for a good old fashion romance and someone who shamelessly loves to eat, then Mostly Martha offers all the perfect ingredients to more than satisfy your appetite.
Though the plot is predictable, the movie never feels formulaic, because the attention is on the nuances of the emotional development of the delicate characters.
A fine recipe for entertainment: add two chefs, one child, mix in a dash of love, a generous helping of comedy and serve in a delightful setting.
Even when foreign directors ... borrow stuff from Hollywood, they invariably shake up the formula and make it more interesting.
While this film is not in the least surprising, it is still ultimately very satisfying. Think of it as a sort of comfort food for the mind.
The music makes a nice album, the food is enticing and Italy beckons us all.

Flavorful and romantic, you could call this How Martha Got Her Groove Back -- assuming, that is, she ever had one to begin with.
