German director Sandra Nettelbeck whips up a tasty entry in the burgeoning "love and food" romance genre with MOSTLY MARTHA, the tragicomic tale of an uptight professional chef who finds her world turned upside down when she becomes the caretaker for her newly orphaned niece Lina (Maxime Foerste). Martina Gedeck stars as Martha, whose obsession with precision gourmet cooking extends to discussing recipes with her bewildered therapist (August Zirner) and verbally attacking anyone at the restaurant who attempts to send her food back. When she's forced to expand her life to include Lina, her hermetic world begins to crumble. Sullen, despondent, and--worst of all--refusing to eat, Lina proves herself more than a match for Martha's iron will. Enter a boisterous, life-embracing Italian chef (Sergio Castellitto) who's been hired at the restaurant without Martha's consent, and the table is set. Sparks fly, personalities clash, and simmering, repressed emotions come bubbling to the frothy surface. Though perhaps not the most original recipe, the acting here is as impeccable as the cooking, and the cinematography, by longtime Nettlebeck-collaborator Michael Bertl, infuses the food and locales with glistening, sumptuous warmth. Reviews for Mostly Martha
The music makes a nice album, the food is enticing and Italy beckons us all.
It has the elegance associated with haute cuisine, so it rises a level above your typical Hollywood chick flick.
A delightful little film that revels in its own simplicity, Mostly Martha will leave you with a smile on your face and a grumble in your stomach.
Wenn Sie "deutschen cinema," das erste Ding denken, das zu Gemüt kommt, ist romanisch und Komödie, Recht?
A sort of light celluloid snack, easy to swallow but not really nourishing.
A shrewd blend of crisp humor and restrained heart-tugging, likely to prove very appealing to American audiences.
As much as any other motion picture that employs the preparation and consumption of food as a key element, Mostly Martha provides the perfect blend of cinematic nourishment and gratification.
Hardly anything that happens in the movie qualifies as surprising. But even the familiar plot twists are maneuvered with spry wit and keen intelligence.
If Mostly Martha is mostly unsurprising, it's still a sweet, even delectable diversion.
While this film is not in the least surprising, it is still ultimately very satisfying. Think of it as a sort of comfort food for the mind.
Nettelbeck throws together a child who isn't cute and a woman who isn't lovable, and the result is one of the year's more heartwarming movies.
Takes a rather simple, mostly predictable and small story and manages to turn it into something quite good and, to keep with the cooking symbolism, meaty.
The wonder of Mostly Martha is the performance of Gedeck, who makes Martha enormously endearing.
This crowd-pleasing character study might feel more like a confection than a satisfying meal, but there's no denying its lighthearted pleasures.
