Many More Mummy Movies May Be Made

Have you had enough of the Mummy films yet? We hope not, because it seems like more of them -- perhaps many more -- are on their way.

Last week, Australia's Herald Sun published an interview with Luke Ford, who stars in this year's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, about the possibility that Universal might be eyeing him to head up his own adventures:

There was talk at one point they might do a spin off series with Alex O'Connell, depending on the success of this film...they're picking me up to be in the franchise, not necessarily taking over it. I'd definitely like to be part of that series if they ask me again.

Now, MTV Movies reports that Ford's co-star, Maria Bello, has "already signed on for a whole trilogy of sequels," and views further installments as a certainty:

I don't know when, but it's going...[There will] absolutely be "The Mummy 4."

For what it's worth, the third Mummy -- the first for Bello, who's taking over for Rachel Weisz -- is her favorite: she tells MTV that although she likes the first two movies in the series, she loves Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Of course, it's tough to beat the thrill of close combat with an invisible foe:

In the beginning of the movie I do a sword fight with an invisible mummy. I had to be on wires and do sword work. It took days to do, and it was so much fun. I would do flips on the wire and I'd land down and be like a little kid.

as long as its not released on or around the BIG movies this summer...this should do fine. waitin' for the trailer though. they can keep makin em(unless this one just sucks 2ss) as long as Fraser is the lead. you put somebody else in it...you risk it sucking big time.

I liken these movies to someone deciding to film Indiana Jones using only the resources they find at Costco-- and when you make 60-70% of the profits of an authentic Indy movie but only spend 30-50% of the budget, you can afford repeat trips to Costco.

Nothing wrong with Mummy movies as long as they don't try to make them more than what they are meant to be and that they don't allow Michael E-Bay or Roland Emmerich anywhere near the set during filming.

Agreed. Even though I hate Indiana Jones, these are total ripoffs. And if your director is rob cohen then your film is almost garunteed to suck so the sequels seem unlikely.

Without Mrs. Rachel Weisz, the movie will be a little damaged. However, I was a fan of both films so I'll give it a benefit of the doubt. Not a lot though...

They should cap it off at 4... anymore will just make it more and more stale. I would actually only like 3, a nice and neat Mummy Trilogy. Of course not counting the horrendous Scorpion King.

Did anyone really LOVE the Mummy movies? I don't know anyone who's particularly excited about part 3 coming out. I mean people must have LIKED them at the time, but I always thought they just managed to do well because there was no real competition in the sort of fantastical adventure arena when they came out. That's the only reason I went to see em. These days its quite a crowded market and I think the Mummy films just aren't up to par. We'll see how this next one does, but banking on a whole bunch more seems premature to me.

I really LOVE the first one...

It's really entertaining and the actual mummy was a pretty impressive technological feat at the time.

The sequel though... disappointing. It became all CG with no story, especially during the climax which was like one big colourful hyperactive orgy. Then of course, Sommer's made VAN HELSING and amazingly out-did himself in this respect. At least with THE MUMMY RETURNS, the attack on a london bus was worthwhile.

The original MUMMY however, it seems to appear on tele every year, where I now find myself having seen it several times. I can honestly say it has great repeat value if you're having a night in. It has great pacing, some hilarious characters, and the action/horror aspects of it are top notch.

I don't like kid centered spin-offs...if the lead isn't Brendan Fraser I don't want to see it. They're already making a horrible Scorpion King sequel with some guy about ten years younger than The Rock and about three times less buff...and it's a sequel not a prequel, my moneys on that going direct to DVD because just from what I read on IMDb it sounds like total crap. But really, no more Mummy films if Fraser isn't the star, why dump him for? He's got nothing else to do and the first two films were probably his best work!

This is nothing new. Give Universal a big box-office gross and they'll turn ANYTHING into a franchise. Just look at Fast and the Furious, Bring It On, Land Before Time, American Pie, etc., etc., barf, blech...
