Bill Plympton's fourth feature-length animated film, about a group of aliens that return to earth with an astronaut who was lost in space for 20 years, is campy, pornographic, and gross. Anyone familiar with Plympton's previous work knows these are the characteristics that make his films such outrageous, irreverent fun. When Dr. Frubar (George Casden) tries to kill astronaut Earl Jensen (Dan McComas) by draining all his fuel from his space ship so that he gets lost in space, Jensen's daughter Josie (Francine Lobis) spends her life hoping for her father's return in order to exact revenge on Dr. Frubar. When Earl finally returns, he brings four mutant aliens with him that he specially devised to kill Dr. Frubar and foil his evil plans to take over the world through advertising. The loveable, though violent, aliens wreak havoc on earth with boisterously entertaining, gross-out effect. One hilarious highlight from the film includes a battle scene between life-size noses and life-size fingers that are ruled by life-size eyeballs. Plympton's whimsical animation, characterized by spastic line drawings and a fascination with facial features, has appeared on MTV and in television advertisements. [More]

Though this rude and crude film does deliver a few gut-busting laughs, its digs at modern society are all things we've seen before.

This slender plot feels especially thin stretched over the nearly 80-minute running time.

Outrageousness is all Plympton seemed to be going for this time. We miss the quirky amazement that used to come along for an integral part of the ride.

Zany, exuberantly irreverent animated space adventure.

Fans of Plympton’s shorts may marginally enjoy the film, but it is doubtful this listless feature will win him any new viewers.

While the humor is recognizably Plympton, he has actually bothered to construct a real story this time.

It's a work by an artist so in control of both his medium and his message that he can improvise like a jazzman.

For the future, one hopes Mr. Plympton will find room for one more member of his little band, a professional screenwriter.

Will no doubt delight Plympton's legion of fans; others may find 80 minutes of these shenanigans exhausting.

Becomes the last thing you would expect from a film with this title or indeed from any Plympton film: boring.

The director's twitchy sketchbook style and adroit perspective shifts grow wearisome amid leaden pacing and indifferent craftsmanship (most notably wretched sound design).
