Consensus: A love-it-or-hate-it stalkerazzi documentary, My Date With Drew effectively draws on America's celeb-obsessed pop culture so that viewers either unabashedly identify with it, or are filing restraining orders on Drew Barrymore's behalf.

Runtime: 90 mins

Genre: Television

Synopsis: Here's the deal. Brian has been crazy about Drew since the 2nd grade when he first saw her in E.T. So now it's 20 years later and he figured since she hasn't come knockin' on his door, he's gonna have to make the first move. Problem... She's Drew Barrymore! But wait, it's not as crazy as you might think. See, Brian figured he'd combine his two great passions in life - making movies and Drew Barrymore - and document his quest to meet Drew. That way he will represent the "everyman", and his quest will seem noble... instead of just desperate. Next problem... Brian is completely broke. And he doesn't even own a video camera to make this documentary. Fortunately, he recently won $1,100 on a game show! So he figured it must be fate. He will use this cash prize to seize the moment and pursue his dream. And as it turns out, you don't even need any money to buy a video camera these days, thanks to Circuit City's 30-day Return Policy. So he grabbed a friend's credit card and picked out the most expensive camera in the store, knowing he will have to finish his documentary before the camera has to go back. So now Brian has 30 days and $1,100 to get a date with Drew Barrymore. Armed only with steadfast determination and an uninsured video camera, Brian will summon the powers of the "Six Degrees of Separation", figuring he must know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who knows Drew. Don't worry, it's not like he's expecting a relationship or anything. He's just talking about one dinner here. Heck, the girl's gotta eat, right? This is a movie for anyone who's ever imagined getting a date with the person of their dreams…and then realized they don't have a chance in hell. But despite the odds, Brian finds encouragement in the words of Drew Barrymore... "If you don't take risks, you'll have a wasted soul." So with your help and a little bit of luck, Brian will succeed in his quest and "My Date with Drew" will inspire moviegoers everywhere to follow their dreams. -- © Drew Crew, LLC [More]

Definitely one of those "stand up and cheer for the little guy" type of films, which probably has old Frank Capra grinning wherever the hell he is.

Although charming at times, My Date With Drew comes across as more than a little bit creepy given the present context of celebrity stalkers - not to mention the sight of a middle-aged man fawning over the portrait of a young child.

The film's apparent naïve charm started working on me until I was hooked by its schleppy hero-filmmaker and its screwy -- borderline stalker -- premise.

The result is amusing, although it offers little insight into concepts of fame or fandom.

In this TV reality show masquerading as a movie documentary, Brian Herzlinger is a creepy voyeur, a run-of-the-mill loser who obsesses about living the celebrity high life but lacks the talent to pull it off.
