The game, a Mystery tradition, consists of locals, young and old, who gather weekly on a pond to play a serious game of hockey. A sports network sees big bucks in setting up an exhibition game between the Alaskans and the New York Rangers. Coming from mega-writer/producer Kelley and co-screenwriter O'Byrne, the film plays like a quirky blend of NORTHERN EXPOSURE and SLAPSHOT. [More]

Mystery, Alaska is fun to watch, even if you're not a hockey fan, thanks to an appealing cast and some exciting game scenes.

It's as slow-moving as a Zamboni machine, wooden as a hockey stick and as predictable as a goal scored on an open net.

The hockey game itself is nothing special, with neither the kinetic excitement nor the dramatic tension needed to bring the scenes to life.

Kelley is obviously aware that to make the move from TV to films he must fill his scripts with greater depth and density.

There is more to enjoy here than not. But when it's "not", it pushes the limits of what one is willing to swallow.

Crowe gives the kind of thoughtful performance that suggests what Mystery, Alaska could have been if it had stayed in focus.

There is no denying Kelley's ability to write a funny one-liner or pen a poignant speech, but this frustrating film has the potential to be much more than it is, especially with the collection of able actors on hand.

Doesn't quite achieve its goal, but this overgrown little movie does offer solid laughs, engaging performances and a captivating setting.
