Box Office Guru Wrapup: Cage, Alvin, and Will Still Rule Multiplexes
The year ends with a bang.

The final frame of 2007 saw moviegoers rush out and catch up on holdovers as last weekend's biggest hits remained atop the charts. The Disney adventure sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets held steady at number one for the second straight time grossing an estimated $35.6M. Dropping a reasonable 20%, the PG-rated actioner saw its ten-day total soar to $124M. Nicolas Cage's franchise pic averaged a terrific $9,299 from 3,832 playdates. Book of Secrets has already broken into the Top 20 chart of this year's blockbusters and stands a chance of reaching the Top 10. That would be fitting since five of the six biggest hits of 2007 were sequels.

Another PG-rated film catering to moviegoers of all ages followed in second. Fox's family comedy sensation Alvin and the Chipmunks saw its weekend gross climb up 7% from last weekend to an estimated $30M which boosted the cume to a stunning $142.4M in only 17 days. If estimates hold, Alvin will become the first film in a year and a half to gross $30M or more in its third weekend. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was the last smash to do it back in July 2006. Alvin already sits at number 13 among all blockbusters from 2007 and is Fox's second-biggest hit of the year after the $183.1M of The Simpsons Movie.

Will Smith's megahit I Am Legend collected an estimated $27.5M in its third weekend, off 18%, pushing its sensational total to $194.6M after 17 days. The Warner Bros. blockbuster is just a couple of days away from becoming the ninth blockbuster of 2007 to cross the $200M mark edging out 2005's eight to set a new industry record. National Treasure and Alvin could both still join the club by the end of their runs. Together the three end-of-year behemoths have grossed a combined $461M and counting giving the year an explosive finish.

Leading all films for mature adults was Charlie Wilson's War with an estimated $11.8M which was up a healthy 22% from last weekend's opening frame. With Christmas over and grown-ups having more available time, the Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts pic upped its cume to a decent $34.5M which was almost identical to the $35.1M that the studio saw exactly a year ago from its CIA drama The Good Shepherd in its first ten days which also included the yuletide holiday week. That political saga appealed to much the same audience and went on to gross $59.9M domestically. War cost $75M to produce.

Indie darling Juno continued to overwhelm at the box office leaping up into the number five slot with an estimated $10.3M despite playing in only 998 theaters. Every film above it on the charts is in at least 2,500 sites. The teen pregnancy tale averaged a still-superb $10,321 in its fourth frame and pushed the sum up to a remarkable $25.7M. Juno is already outperforming Fox Searchlight's dysfunctional family comedy hit from last year Little Miss Sunshine which in its fourth frame grossed $5.6M from its expansion into 691 locations for a $8,120 average and $12.7M total. With buzz snowballing, kudos attention becoming more focused, and a long awards season still ahead of it, Juno looks to challenge Sunshine and 2004's Sideways to become the distributor's highest-grossing film ever. Those Oscar-winning comedies banked $59.9M and $71.5M, respectively.

Juno.
My love.
It deserves all the overwhelming success its seeing.
Hopefully it will continue to make bank at the box office, and become a staple classic for its genre.
Because it truly is.

Ellen Page is the breakout actress of the year.

Can't wait to see There Will Be Blood.
So many good films out right now...its overwhelming.

I love Oscar season!!!

Meanwhile, Walk Hard plummets off the face of the Earth.

Walk Hard just got lost in the oversaturation of movies. Hell I dare say Judd A and the gang are pulling a Dane Cook of "too much between a small period time". Not saying they are played out, but 3 movies in a 6 month period is alot.

I don't get the orgy of love for Juno. It's a good film and worth seeing, but it suffers from periods of overwrought self-righteousness and dialogue that isn't always witty but annoying. Ellen Page does a tepid performance, and occasionally looks like she just snorted several lines of speed cut with coke. With a better actress this would have been a great film.

there was a midnight sneak preview screening of There Will Be Blood at a local theatre which was almost sold out. What a mind blowing film that isn't for everyone but for the audience that has been waiting it won't disappoint. The word that comes to mind to describe it, and Daniel Day Lewis' preformanced, is prefect.
(If he doesn't win the oscar there is no justice in the world)

I'm glad to see juno is doing good too because that was a great movie and deserves far more praise then sideways and little miss sunshine together!

National Treasure must be getting good word of mouth? Only a 20% drop for such a bad sequel- that's really amazing. I warned everyone I know to stay away from that at all costs. Juno in the Top 5 is a nice surprise.

I'm pretty sure that Little Miss Sunshine is better than Juno, but I may be wrong.

Can't wait for Blood. I've missed out on so many good movies this year. I think the last movie I saw in theaters was Transformers. I really need to start catching up. Did however see control. What a fantastic film.

Juno has by far been the best movie of the year and it is awesome that it is getting recognition. Alvin wasn't horrible by the way, but the money its making is rediculous.

So... we're basically guaranteed National Treasure 3: Canyon of Mysteries and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Rodents in Rehab.

Great. Just great. BRING ON THE SEQUELS.

Sideways is ten-times better than Juno and Sunshine is almost as good as Sideways but Juno is getting to much overrated attention. Still need to see Atonement and There Will be Blood.

Walk Hard made me chuckle a few times but it is not that great(C ), while AVP:R is the worst of the 8 Alien/Predator movies.

Walk Hard is overrated by fans on here. Judd A has to constantly deliever from now on after his past track record, and Walk Hard just wasn't all there.

Let's just not even talk about Nic Cage, or those lame rodents. They just simply aren't worth anyone's time or frustration. So I've completely given up. Comletely.
The basic moviegoer sucks, is what I've come up with, so they waste away their money.
Even worse sequels are bound to happen. So prepare yourselves people.

While I admitted my undying love for Juno on here [I feel its slightly better than Little Miss Sunshine], its NOT the best movie of the year, as Ebert proclaimed. It is excellent, quirky, witty, hilarious, and definitely top ten, but not #1.
And Ellen Page IS Juno. Do not insult her amazingness in this film. She's perfect, and deserves to be Hollywood Next Big Thing.
Though the crazies who keep ranting and ranting about it are annoying to no end, surely. Its really NOT a new movie, there's been buzz [in the right circles] for months.

My #1 of the year goes to ATONEMENT [also one of my favorite novels], with No Country For Old Men in at a close #2.
Just need to see There Will Be Blood, Sweeney Todd, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and The Savages to complete my necessary wish list.
I don't have any huge interest in Charlie Wilson; seems like more of a rental for me.

Juno was pretty good, certainly one of the top 15 of the year, but not the best. Though it was better than Little Miss Sunshine and Sideways.

Ok once again you people don't see the light in front of your face...........Movies that have strong, big FAN BASES will always prevail over most movies, except ones that look awesome like I Am Legend. And telling all of your friends not to see those movies won't make a difference because that's like what, 10 people that won't see a movie, that's about $100 that the millons it makes, it won't! I enjoyed National Treasure 2, and brought my girlfriend to see Alvin which was pretty enjoyable too! Just stop slandering these movies for no good reason, it's all about the fans.

I'm not sure I get why Sideways and Juno are being compared. I will say that going into seeing Sideways all I heard was all the superhype and totally thought it was going to be overrated. I came away though singing even more praise for it and was shocked it lived up to the hype. Sideways and Aviator were both better than Million Dollar Baby.

The "fan base" of the National Treasure movies should go out and rent or buy the Indiana Jones movies instead of wasting their money.

I can't say anything about Alvin because that is a movie I will never see.

Why is the nerds like to attack fans of movies that are actually entertaining? Hell i just saw Juno and it was nothing special, i think i fell asleep in it. Now National Treasure was fun, it was entertaining, YOU KNOW THAT WORD, THE WORD THAT ALL MOVIES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE.

But then again you have kfarschman who has no idea what a good movie is and only likes Juno and such because he is a tool of the critics.
