Disney Planning More National Treasure, Pirates Sequels?
Mickey loves the smell of money.

Blog Article | Discuss Article
If you watched the final scene of National Treasure: Book of Secrets and thought to yourself, "Ah, that's the beginning of National Treasure 3 right there," give yourself a gold star, buckaroo -- looks like you were right.

According to Jim Hill Media, Disney registered nationaltreasure3dvd.com and nationaltreasure4dvd.com at the end of January, thus signaling their intention to continue Nicolas Cage's stint as globetrotting historian/detective/treasure guy Ben Gates through at least two more sequels. Mr. Hill speculates that we can expect to see more Treasure sometime in 2010; in the meantime, for those of you who just can't get enough Cage-as-Gates, Disney Press has apparently rolled out a series of "Gates Family Mystery" books. The first installment is on shelves now.

In other Disney sequel news, Jim Hill Media goes on to discuss the first far-off rumblings of a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean. While he doesn't discuss any concrete reports (or even rumors), Hill does revisit the final moments of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and passes along what he's heard about a potential Pirates 4:

"I hear [it] would toss the Elizabeth & Will characters over the side in favor of doing a bawdy buddy picture which would star Jack Sparrow & Barbossa. Where both captains of the Black Pearl would initially be competing for the exact same prize. But eventually all the double crossing would have to stop as these two rivals were then forced to join forces in order to defeat some supernatural terror..."

Wow, that sounds... Okay, there's really nothing clever/sarcastic/catty left to say about movie sequels anymore is there? However, I suppose if they can get Depp back, there's hope that Pirates will at least be entertaining... right?

The best aspect for me about the first National Treasure was the Masonic storyline and national history. That approach seemed to take a back seat in the sequel. Hopefully with two more films in the works, they will stick with the first formula and incorporate a deeper, broader sense of our national orgiins instead of just looking for treasure.

As for another Pirates movie, I was disappointed with the two sequels, so I don't know why I wouldn't be with more.

I agree w/ Vortex&Vertigo, keep it simple, stupid. Pirates 3 was way too hard to follow for an action-adventure film. Everybody double-crossing everyone else, it didn't make a whole lot of sense and wasn't that fun to watch. The only people who should be working the angle are Jack and maybe Barbossa. If everyone is a bent arrow instead of a straight one, how is Jack and Barbossa supposed to distinguish themselves.

Back to basics, please. Dump the director who went "overboard" on the last few films, and start fresh w/ a new plot.

Here's to hoping for a coherent plot!
For pirates that is.
I refuse to see National Treasure 2.
Or any other of it's sequels.

Watching Super Tuesday was more entertaining then Pirates 3...

keeping it simple with Jack and Barbosa... may be a double bladed sword because even though its not bogged down with needless characters and useless plot points... youve now put all of your chips on the table.. how many more times can we see these two go at it?

Not too much longer IMO...

I can live with a new National Treasure film, but please God, I don't want to see a trailer for Pirates 4 anytime soon. Pirates 3 was so horrible I can't even imagine a sequel.

wait, disney making sequels simply because they CAN? no way! if either of these "sequels" surprises you...i advise you to go to your local Busta and check out their kids section. disney has sequelized every single thing they've EVER made...ever. even old favorites have sequels. disney is like white trash...they reproduce simply because they can, not because they should. the movie world would be a better place if somebody put a giant movie condom on them...

Yeah! that's what I'm talking about! "A Pirates Buddy Film", it's about time Jack Sparrow is getting a real buddy in the form of Chris Tucker or Owen Wilson, or wait... even better: Jackie Chan!!. Naah! just kidding.

Just toss the Elizabeth & Will characters and I'll be happy to watch in the theaters every Pirates of the Caribbean's sequel.

The National Treasure movies suck! no more please. The Pirates of The Carribean series is good, except for 3.

If we're going to do another Pirates movie as a buddy pic w/Sparrow and Barbossa, why not just take the script from the first true buddy pic--48 Hours--and re-work it to fit the needs of this film?

Barbossa: Aye, but get this straight, Jack! We be not partners, nor buddies, nor even friends! I'm puttin' ye down and keepin' ye down, 'til Davy Jones be locked up or dead! And if Jones gets away, ye'll be sorry ye ever met me!

Sparrow: I'm already sorry!

{Why not? Because Hollywood just can't come up with anything new anymore...}

i liked book of secrets and will probably like the next one or two national treasure movies, as for pirates i think a fourth installment is necessary to reestablish the series and be remembered for a good ending...

Johnny Depp severely over did Jack Sparrow in Pirates 2 and 3. If he toned it back down to Black Pearl level, Sparrow would be cool again. Barbossa was always cool.
