Celebrated choreographer Farah Khan (MAIN HOON NA) gets her second directing credit with this Bollywood musical set in India's film industry. DEVDAS star Shah Rukh Khan plays Om Prakash Makhija, an actor struggling to move past being an extra in 1977. But despite his lowly status, he falls in love with and meets--in that order--a lovely A-list actress named Shanti (the stunning Deepika Padukone). But their love seems doomed to fail when the pair is killed in mysterious circumstances. Fast-forward 30 years, and they have been reborn, but this time it's Om who is the celebrity while Shanti (now called Sandy) tries to climb her way to the top. But death wasn't enough to keep them apart as they meet again in their new lives, and the one responsible for their deaths will have to answer for what he did. Though OM SHANTI OM is a fun film on its own, it works best as a celebration of Bollywood's rich history. In the sparkling ‘70s segments, actors appear alongside beloved stars of the era. There are plenty of in-jokes that only fans of Indian films will get, and the movie features enough cameos to rival Robert Altman's THE PLAYER. OM SHANTI OM also includes a number of dazzling dance sequences that Bollywood fans have come to expect. In addition to her duties as director, Farah Khan creates innovative choreography for her cast, including especially fun moments with the always-charming Shah Rukh Khan as a pirate, and one with a host of actors playing badminton. Reviews for Om Shanti Om
Both a homage to and parody of Bollywood, this cinematic feast delivered straight from the heart of the film industry will have you glued to your seats till the end.
Om Shanti Om reaches exuberant musical highs that outshine the melodrama surrounding the set pieces.
The team of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and A-list-choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan have pushed the Main Hoon Na gentle masala movie parody to repetitive extremes.
While Om Shanti Om loses steam by its last act, the stylish, smart, hilarious ride to that point is rewarding enough.
