I'd add "Braveheart", just for David O'hara's performance as Stephen.

Even though it's not really what this list is going for, that's one of my favorite performances ever :)

As an Irishman, I always shudder when I look at the 'finest' films we have made. Of this list, the only films really worth watching are Once (the one Irish film that doesn't make a fool out of itself by rubbing its oirishness in your face at every opportunity) and Darby O'Gill (for pure kitch, nostalgic nonsense).

Everything else is usually just OK, with no ability whatsoever to capture the Ireland I know. Watched The Snapper today, which was admittedly enjoyable but ultimately throwaway film which drew on the old working class stereotypes to get its laughs. Bloody Sunday is OK too, as is the Butcher Boy. But the vast majority of stuff we are currently sifting through in our National Cinema course in college is shocking. Just always think our work gives viewers a false image of modern Ireland (see the recent and IMO overrated Garage).

What? The Departed? That wasn't an Irish movie. It was American. Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Whalberg, Alec Baldwin... all American. And it takes place in Boston. Maybe the characters' heritage was Irish, as was some of the soundtrack, but that's it.

Once was a fantastic movie. I'm glad to see it on the list.

I'm not into splitting hairs about who shot the movie or it's country of origin but the following are recent movies with an Irish Theme I've enjoyed:

The Wind That Shakes the Barley

Borstal Boy

Braveheart is set in Scotland not Ireland...geez, the U.K is just one solitary, unified blob on the map to you eh.
And frankly I be;ieve Braveheart to be highly overrated. 'My Left Foot' - now there's a movie worthy of the list, hell, i'd say that's one of of the best films i've ever seen.

Here's a new category. Irish-themed films in the US/Irish actors portraying Irish personas in US-released films.

He's talking about the Irish actor in Braveheart, easy on the bashing before you read the substance. I thought Micheal Collins was a fantastic Irish Film. Although having an Englishman play Eamon DeValera was a bit off putting to me even if it was the delightful Alan Rickman. I can forgive it though since his parents were Irish and Welsh.

Sorry, but Boondock Saitns is terrible. To answer a previous posters question, no, you are NOT the only person to have seen Boondock Saints. In fact, I'm not sure there's anyone anymore that hasn't seen Boondock Saints, and therein lies the problem. I enjoyed it the first time I rented it, and on subsequent viewings decided I liked it less. Then it got introduced to the college crowd, and anyone with even the slightest "edge" began listing it as their favorite movie... as though they were cool for being aware of such a commercial failure. This really ruined the movie for me, personally. I'm trying to sit through it and enjoy it, and all I can think of is the three dozen frat boys I've see on Facebook "informing" their friends of what a "great" movie it is.

It's NOT an Irish movie -- so let's just get that out of the way -- and, really, not nearly as clever as it's made out to be, either. The cat scene was surprising (and admittedly funny), but the rest of the movie is done much better by folks like Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino.

What about "Cal"? A great movie for understanding the "troubles" between Catholic and Protestant.. and great performances.

Being of Irish descent (Peggy Monaghan O'Malley Kelly - maiden name), I found "Waking Ned Devine" silly and stereotypical.

Then there is "Dancing at Lunasa", "Into the West", "...Roan Inish..." - my grandparents still remembered the legends and blended Catholicism with belief in fairy trees and little people - so PLEASE get rid of "Darby O'Gill" which offended me even as a child! If you actually know the true legends (oxymoronic unless you are Irish then you get it) - pots of gold and green-clad elves are totally Disney... the little people were tricksters mostly and sometimes helpers but never visible and never cute. In fact, their invisibility is what saved them from the Celts (brutes) when they invaded their land (look it up) -

I hate St> Patrick's Day - It is a saint's day and it falls during Lent so all this foolishness is for non-Irish.

Wow, unless you're more than 2000 years old then they stories are very much part of your heritage. While in the original Celtic stories you're right Lugh the Long Hand (The original Celt who we draw the word Leprechaun from)and his Tuatha DeDanaan were not Small little people looking to hide gold that is what the stories evolved into. Much like Fairy tales from the Grimm Bros, Beowulf and Greek myths evolved thru time as their people changed. Its a legend that adapted as it's people adapted and they had become the stories we know today long before Walt Disney was even born and since most of these stories originated with the Celts I doubt they painted themeselves as "Brutes" it's more likey you are confusing the Celts with stories of The Formorii and the invasions of Saxons and Welsh from across the Isles. The Celts generally considered themselves the inheritors of the land from the Tuatha who were the original inhabitants of the Isles who as part of a natural progression were dying out and going into hiding becasue there was no place in the world for magic anymore. These are the stories I remember anyway from my grandmother and I've never heard or read anything that would disparage me from that and SERIOUSLY?!? Darby O'Gill offended you? and like I said unless you are somehow pre-christian Irish then St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and the vast majority of people in Ireland being Catholic would probably resent aspersions on their nationality because of their celebration of him.

Oh and for all the Boondock St's people once and for all even though I enjoy that movie too, Boston and New York are not in Ireland and as most Irish and Scots are more than happy to tell you being 3rd generation descendants of Irish and Scots does not make you Irish or Scottish you're still just Americans and should be proud of it. Though they welcome your tourist dollars :)

I did go off on a rant - the St. Patrick's thing is more about the Americanization - green beer - cartoonish quality of the whole thing. In my family, it was a sacred holiday, not an excuse to get wasted. It was a day for family and gratitude during a holy time of year, Lent.

And yes, even as a young child I found "Darby O'Gill" offensive because I was surrounded by real Irish people (recent immigrants) who were dignified despite their poverty. Perhaps if you think of characters like Buckwheat as offensive you will see what I mean.

And to Big Brother - about the religious comments - Irish Catholicism combines many aspect of both Roman Catholicism and Pagan lore. Anyone who has lived with real Irish people knows what I am talking about. That is most likely true of Swedes, Italians, or any other group who bring part of their own culture and lure into all aspects of their lives. My grandmother prayed to St. Anthony and the little people for help when she lost something. She was a DEVOUT Catholic who also believed that fairies actually lived in certain trees (this belief still exists.)

Back to the movies - go see "In Bruges" - while not an Irish movie, it may remind us that Colin Farrell is actually an actor, not just a "star" -

Oh, I almost forgot, the Celts were seen as violent brutes by the Greeks long before they ever got to Ireland. While they "inherited" the land from the Tuatha it was not an easy transition. The clay in the hair, the plaid sash over nothing, as they ran into battle - all made for a fierce foe. (NOT BRAVEHEART)

I'm not going to defend "Boondock", I thought it sucked. But granted that Ireland and New York aren't the same thing, there is much cultural closeness between Ireland and the USA, especially NYC. De Valera, perhaps one of the great modern Irish heroes, was an American. When I was in Ireland they celebrated the 4th of July, purely out of cultural solidarity with America. So there's a lot of love crossing the Atlantic, both ways.

As for movies, yes, "Michael Connelly" is great but a bit boring at times. "The Field" is depressing but awesome. "Roan Inish" is an acquired taste, but worth the effort. "Quiet Man" is a no-brainer.

"Magdelene Sisters" was an insult to faithful Irish Catholics everywhere. Did things like the movie portray happen? Sure. Was it the norm with nuns, like the movie implies? Of course not. Anti-Catholic tripe, through and through. Unfortunately I'm not surprised to see RT recommending it.

This might be a slightly radical suggestion for a movie website, but there are great Irish histories and legends out there worth reading.

Sorry, Americans -- I meant "reading drunk".

boondock saints is highly overrated. i hate people who think it's the best thing they've ever seen; it makes me wish i could meet them from the interwebz just to punch them in the face. ...also, do people not understand that ireland is a country that ISN'T part of the greater boston area?

To add to your list of favorite Irish films, "Young Cassidy" starring Rod Taylor, Maggie Smith, Julie Christie, Flora Robson, Michael Redgrave, Edith Evans, Sian Phillips, Jack MacGowran and members of the Abbey Theater company.

It's the early life of Sean O'Casey and, if you've never seen it, it's on Turner Classic Movies today at 6:00pm ET.

Good choices except for Once, which astoundingly found an audience for a 10 minute screenplay and interminably inflated songs. (Yes, I know I'm in the vast minority on that one.) Glad to see The Magdalene Sisters on the list. I'd forgotten about that fine movie. What about The Quiet Man? The Dead? Young Cassidy?

definitely "Micheal Collins". and i know i will be lambasted for this one, but i will also throw down "An Everlasting Piece". i found it quite enjoyable. i don't know if it counts but i liked "Da" as well. and if this was a list of american movies with irish or irish-american characters i'd toss in "Road to Perdition". but it's not, so i won't. lambaste away!

I don't know...I would still put The Departed in there. It had shades of Ireland. Even my wife liked it because of the Irish color in Boston.

But hers is in the Top Ten: Darby O' Gill. :)

One movie I really enjoyed that I have not seen mentioned is The Boxer (1997 staring Daniel Day-Lewis).

Why would The Retarted, oops I mean The Departed, be on any "Greats" lists. IT was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, might actually be the worst. Glad Once is on there loved that one and My Left Foot as well was a very moving picture. Gotta check out most of the others.

These lists always choose the cheeziest OIRISH films. The Quite man and D'arby o'Gill are both rubbish. Where is The Wind That Shakes The Barley, Intermission, Adam and Paul, Michael Collins, The Butcher Boy or The Crying Game? In America deserves a mention aswell. I'm also not too sure if In Bruges was out when this list was collated but that is a fantastic movie.

This is for JoshTee! if he even reads this, but really stop complaining about why you don't like Boondock Saints just because it got popular, if thats all you care about cry, just because " Frat Boys " started liking it doesn't mean that you should dislike it, and just because it was not directed by someone you like does not mean that its a crappy movie, I think if Troy Duffy wrote the movie he has every right to direct it also, it's his movie, he should be able to direct how he wants not some other director!
