Consensus: Laughably melodramatic, Original Sin features bad acting, bad dialogue, and bad plotting.

Then, magically, she appears--Julia (Angelina Jolie). And, she is beautiful, unlike the woman whose picture she sent. But Luis had lied as well--he wrote that he was only a clerk in the coffee company that he actually owns. In spite of their deceptions, they marry immediately. They are blissfully happy, although Julia has her demons. She has nightmares, she ignores her sister's letters, and--mysteriously--won't open her trunk. Her sister sends an unnerving detective to check that she arrived. Still unsatisfied, her sister arrives herself. That's when Julia disappears with the money in Luis's bank accounts, instantaneously transforming Luis's dream into a nightmare. Scriptwriter/director Michael Cristofer explores sexual obsession and deception in ORIGINAL SIN. The sumptuous thriller, based on Cornell Woolrich's classic noir novel, has elegant, lush photography by Mexican director of photography Roderigo Prieto, and a Cuban-inflected jazz score by composer Terence Blanchard. Thomas Jane is forceful as the detective. Antonio Banderas captures Luis's bliss, bewilderment, and anger perfectly. But, the troubled center of the movie is Julia, and Angelina Jolie is at her best as she reveals the joy and turmoil of a woman who doesn't know how to deal with love and can't break free from her past. Cristofer packs so many foreboding clues into the first half-hour that a blind, deaf, and illiterate Swahili-speaker could sense there's something amiss.

The combination of a smoldering Banderas and a simmering Jolie generates as much heat as a 40-watt bulb.

This strained period thriller is definitely on the lame side.

It's hard to keep a straight face just thinking of Mr. Banderas and Ms. Jolie in the same shot, but Original Sin will bore the giggles right out of you.

It's an exuberant example of what it is -- a bodice-ripping murder 'meller' -- and at that it gets a passing grade.

Director Michael Christofer falls victim to the frivolous trappings of...pulp carnality, letting the tawdry get the better of him...

Even with all its delicious atmosphere, the movie is just spectacularly uninvolving.

The only real joy in this deliriously awful film is that the wacky, bosom-heaving, lip-smacking, rat-poison–drinking psych-outs never stop until the last frame.

We haven't had this much tawdry fun since Pia Zadora and Bo Derek's heydays.

What starts off as a sleazy melodrama with intriguing co-star chemistry quickly gets bogged down in piled-up plot twists.

The film aspires to Hitchcock ... but it comes off like one of those soft-core Red Shoe Diaries flicks you see on cable TV.

Whodunit is the last thing on this period thriller's mossy little mind. But motive is everything, and that's where it fails.

If it had more panache, it would tumble into the infamous so-bad-it's-good category, but that's too positive a label for this sad-sack saga.

Banderas' and Jolie's characters are not recognizably human. They are engineered to fit the mechanics of plot.

Watching Banderas and Jolie rolling around ... you find yourself thinking about Melanie and Billy Bob, Zorro and Lara Croft, and, ultimately, Access Hollywood.
