How do you solve a murder when all the evidence points to you? Suppose everything you knew – everything you trusted – became a lie. For Matt Lee Whitlock, that nightmare has become a reality. Matt (Denzel Washington) is the chief of police in small Banyan Key, Florida. A hardworking man who’s good at his job, he’s respected by his peers and beloved by his community. But when Banyan Key is shocked by a brutal double homicide, Matt starts his investigation – and his life starts to unravel. As details of the case begin to surface, all of the evidence points to Matt as the prime suspect. Now with the investigation in full swing and several people working the case, Matt finds himself in a race against time to solve the murders before others uncover the clues he’s finding and he himself falls under suspicion. He has to stay a few steps ahead of his own police force and everyone he’s trusted in order to clear his name and uncover the horrifying truth. As the film’s intricate storyline twists and turns, speeding towards its explosive climactic confrontation, it becomes all too apparent that the truth is on Matt’s side – time, however, is not. Reviews for Out of Time
Even though it portends to be full of twists and turns, you're really not going to be terribly surprised by what goes on in Out of Time.
What Out of Time lacks in logic, coherence and plausibility, it compensates for, more or less, with the dazzling charisma of its star, Denzel Washington, and the brisk, frisky pace imposed on the proceedings by director Carl Franklin.
[Franklin's] subtle use of local color adds verisimilitude to a scenario that is a quart or two low on reality.
Out of Time is probably Hollywood's most seamless suspense trap since The Fugitive.
Out of Time isn't entirely memorable, and it contains enough plot holes to drive a train through, but the movie is almost all pleasure, stand-up Hollywood entertainment without a trace of pretense, served straight up.
Out Of Time is a cop thriller with a great cast. Trouble is, you may feel as if you've seen it all before.
Out of Time holds enough twists, surprises and laughs to make it a fun ride to the very last frame.
Despite its exciting moments the film is marred by contrivance and implausibilities.
You gotta figure something's wrong when the best part of a Denzel Washington movie is John Billingsley.
Soggy at the beginning, silly at the end, but often riveting in between, Out of Time is another Denzel Washington movie that's nowhere near as good as Denzel Washington.
This dramatic thriller wastes some good performances, some snappy dialogue and some surprisingly tense pacing by falling back on some conveniently convoluted plotting and unlikely character development.
The movie is standard fare, a mindless-enough plot that draws strength from its appealing setting, the aforementioned sultry sandwich and its charismatic star.
Except for Sanaa Lathan, who sears the screen in a brief appearance, director Carl Franklin and his cast seem to realize they're making a second-tier thriller.
Dave Collards' script is certainly inventive and complex but its plot threads quickly unravel as the film goes on and its characters are twisted and pulled into increasingly far-fetched scenarios.
An overly constructed little thriller that squeezes a fair amount of suspense out of its far-fetched plot.
