Carmen Maura stars as Pepi, a crazy Madrid slacker whose friends include Luci (Eva Siva), the masochistic wife of a bullying cop, and 16-year-old Bom (Olvido Gara), the lesbian sadist rocker that Luci leaves her husband for. Lots of crazy vignettes and characters parade by in this melange of outrageousness which includes a bored bearded lady (Kiti Manver), a sex organ measurement contest (presided over by Almodóvar himself), golden showers, drag-queens, drugs, punk rock shows, and a series of commercials for some very special underwear. Working with an obviously low budget and limited means, Almodóvar still succeeds admirably in both shocking and delighting unsuspecting audiences, especially with the help of the splendidly high-spirited performances from all his actors, particularly Maura in the first of their many collaborations. Annoyingly amateurish.

Most notable for its bathroom jokes, humorous rape scenes and abysmal home-movie cinematography, [the film is a] reputation-dimming mess.

A series of screen provocations, including frank and degrading sexual acts, it's designed primarily to jolt the viewer.

For fans of Almodóvar, this first foray into filmmaking is essential viewing.

Pedro Almodovar showed not a whisker of promise in his amateurish directorial debut, a smutty sexual sideshow most safely viewed in a full body condom.
