Critical Consensus: "Knocked Up" Is A Knockout; "Mr. Brooks," "Gracie" Less So

Metafact writes: on May 31 2007 08:17 PM I'm sure Judd apatow is thrilled about the reviews. What could be better for a filmmaker than to have people love your newest film more than its predecesessor? I'm worried, though, that the trashy premise of Mr. Brooks will lure viewers toward that film instead of Knocked Up. Or maybe I'm being unfair; I just want that film to fail because I hate Dane Cook. Oh well. (Reply to this) |

aknddon3 writes: on May 31 2007 10:15 PM In reply to this comment (#867430) Well it is not SOOOOOOOOOO good, it is bad, really bad, 40 year old virgin was okay, this just plain sucks. Not funny at all. Maybe it is because i like real comedies that is the reason why i do not like this. (Reply to this) |

insanemansam5 writes: on May 31 2007 10:25 PM Given the subject matter I actually think the tamatometer was half decent for Mr. Brooks that said I can't imagine who in the world would go see this film. Seriously Costner's target audience is probably my grandparents. I can't imagine them being interested in this film. They were thoroughly disgusted by Silence of the Lambs which sounds like Barney compared to this. (Reply to this) |

Gimy writes: on Jun 01 2007 08:42 AM can you cats give us some opinions on OTHER movies, that way we know if you're an idiot or you actually have a valid opinion that we can believe. mentioning epic movie helps, that series of parodies hasn't been funny in years. 40 year old virgin was hilarious...so i don't value that dude's opinion at all. get what i'm sayin here folks... mr. brooks looks so odd it makes me now want to see it. costner and demi moore, what is this...the rise of the fallen star? add dane cook and it might be so weird...it works. rmobbs writes: on Jun 01 2007 04:12 PM Knocked Up isn't funny. It's not even close to being funny. It's just amazing how people can delude themselves so effectively into thinking it's funny, because it's made by an indie darling. Nothing but stilted acting, flat jokes, tiresome cardboard-cut-out characters, and a ho-hum "man-child grows up" story. (Reply to this) |
|
Mr. Kong writes: on Jun 01 2007 05:03 PM In reply to this comment (#867445) It's amazing how people can like/dislike a movie and come up with a reason why people disagree with them. (Reply to this) |

selke99 writes: on Jun 01 2007 06:55 PM I posted this in another thread, but I came in expecting Knocked Up to be as funny as 40 y/o virgin and it just wasn't. But I still liked it. It was a bit more serious dealing more with marriage and the pregnancy, but most of the funny parts didn't have enough kick like virgin did. Still a good movie though. Paul Rudd is freakin hilarious, he should be in more movies. (Reply to this) |

aknddon3 writes: on Jun 01 2007 08:38 PM In reply to this comment (#867446) Yet no one can give me a valid reason why this movie is funny. Maybe because i try to compare it to real funny movies like Animal House or Space Balls or Airplane. (Reply to this) |

Mr. Kong writes: on Jun 02 2007 06:18 AM In reply to this comment (#867449) Monty Python: awesome Animal House: well, I HEARD it was awesome Billy Madison: no Space Balls: awesome (Reply to this) |

aknddon3 writes: on Jun 02 2007 01:10 PM In reply to this comment (#867451) You have never seen Animal House? How young are you? 10? Plus Billy Madison is fucking awesome. Your opinion is offically void. (Reply to this) |

Mr. Kong writes: on Jun 02 2007 03:37 PM In reply to this comment (#867452) I'm 14. I just haven't gotten around to see it. And I didn't HATE Billy Madison, I just didn't think it was great comedy. I agree that Monty Python and Spaceballs were great movies. (Reply to this) |

BrokebackYoda writes: on Jun 02 2007 08:49 PM Every single one of the "comedies" you named aren't even funny. They're retarded comedies that you thought were funny when you were 10. Except Monty Python...those are pretty funny. And dude...Knocked Up was great...as a comedy, as a serious movie...it worked on ALL levels, even if you didn't think it was funny. Mr Brooks was great too. (Reply to this) |
|
aknddon3 writes: on Jun 03 2007 12:32 PM In reply to this comment (#867454) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, your opinion is official dismissed as being not important. Anyone who would call Animal House, Billy Madison, and the best Mel Brooks movie as not being funny has no say on what is funny. Sorry but you are completely wrong. You might be the only person in the world that does not find those movies funny. And i am older than you so do not call me H (Reply to this) |
|
Mr. Kong writes: on Jun 03 2007 12:39 PM In reply to this comment (#867455) Spaceballs is awesome, but the best Mel Brooks movie is Young Frankenstein. And there's no need for crap like that. So you think you're the only person with good taste? If you hate something, everybody else that likes it has bad taste? If you like something, everyone else that hates it has bad taste? It's not like people can't think differentley than you. (Reply to this) |

Bigbrother writes: on Jun 04 2007 04:16 AM In reply to this comment (#867455) Have to bust you again. You're lying. While a very good Mel Brooks movie I think Blazing Saddles is probably the best Mel Brooks movie of all time. It still makes me laugh so hard my belly hurts when he describes how the 10 year old shot him in the ass while his back was turned. Classic. And I might throw Happy Gilmour in there as the height of Sandler, though I can see where you're coming from with Madison. Who would win in a fight Bob Barker or the Penguin? (Reply to this) |

Bigbrother writes: on Jun 04 2007 04:18 AM What I really want to know is when Leslie Mann is going to do nude scene's? That chick really butters my bread grrrrrrrrrr. Sorry I'll claim that as my caveman moment of the year. All men should have at least one. (Reply to this) |

BrokebackYoda writes: on Jun 04 2007 08:02 AM Well tell the millions of people that went and saw knocked up this weekend and loved it that it sucked...let's see what they say...I mean...it DID make 30 million this weekend...and I'll I've heard was positve reviews...I mean...it was ranked 8.6 on IMDB...and it got 92% percent on RT...so...it seems like SOME people agree with me...and I am sure that MANY MANY people would agree with me that Young Frankenstein was just...soo much better than Spaceballs...they don't even compare. Animal House was somewhat funny...and so was Monty Python...but you can't argue how genius Knocked Up was...not only that...but the 40 year old virgin. So I think that if I MYSELF have the worst taste in movies...then some other people do too...do you hate life? (Reply to this) |
|
Bigbrother writes: on Jun 04 2007 10:30 AM In reply to this comment (#867459) Hmmmm, I may have to agree with Akkndon here on the Spaceballs vs. Young Frankenstein issue. YF is probably cleverer and a better made movie, but for pure laugh out loud belly laughs I think 'Balls has the edge. If I had to do a Top 5 Mel Brooks it would look like this: 1. Blazing Saddles 2. Spaceballs 3. The Producers 4. Young Frankenstein 5. Robin Hood Men in Tights...tight tights...we're butch!!!! (Reply to this) |
|
BrokebackYoda writes: on Jun 04 2007 06:45 PM Seee...but I REALLY don't think Spaceballs is funny. One of the big reasons is I take Star Wars very seriously...haha so perhaps I am a bit biased. (Reply to this) |
|
aknddon3 writes: on Jun 05 2007 02:41 AM In reply to this comment (#867459) Young Frankenstein was good, Space Balls is slightly better, try again. Ask those same people and see if they think that Animal House was somewhat funny, they would laugh at you. You think the best comedy ever is somewhat funny yet Knocked up is awesome? Are you slow? That and 40 year old virgin is not genius, you are a retard. You are the only person that thinks those movies are better than Animals House or the Monty Python movies. (Reply to this) |
|
aknddon3 writes: on Jun 05 2007 02:42 AM In reply to this comment (#867461) I grew up on star wars that is the reason why i love it. You are only 14 so you would not know humor if it came up and bit you on your ass. I cant remember, but Airplane is not a mel brooks movie, right? THAT MOVIES IS AWESOME TOO. (Reply to this) |
|
Bigbrother writes: on Jun 05 2007 05:10 AM In reply to this comment (#867463) Nah, I think Airplane is one of the Zucker, Zucker and Abrams movies like Naked Gun or Top Secret, try watching Top Secret, Top Gun and Tombstone in the same night. Hard to believe that's the same guy. Val Kilmer i mean obviously not the same directors or anything. (Reply to this) |
|
BrokebackYoda writes: on Jun 05 2007 06:40 AM Why the hell do you think everyone on here is 14. I'm not 14! And you know what I think it is...we have a different kind of humor. So pretty much you like...Mel Brooks humor...and I like humor that is random and distgusting...kind of. Ok, not disgusting. But vulgar. Can we just decide on that? (Reply to this) |

Bigbrother writes: on Jun 05 2007 07:48 AM :) Dude, Mel Brooks is pretty vulgar. (Reply to this) |

Ashron writes: on Jun 05 2007 12:29 PM I love how everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY, seems to think that just because someone's opinion differs from theirs, it automatically makes them a lesser person. And everyone thinks their opinion is the only valid one. Comedy is especially divisive, because everyone has a different sense of humor. I will throw my opinions too, although I don't think they're any more valid. They just happen to be mine. Best Mel Brooks Movie: Blazing Saddles. Still the most consistently funny, even now, especially since the issues it overs are still with us. Spaceballs was passable, and had some very funny moment, but also some very stupid (bad stupid, not good stupid) moments. Animal House was great for the time, and I still enjoy it a great deal, but I can see where younger viewers may not appreciate it as much, since by today's standards it's pretty tame. But it is the granddaddy and paved the way for American Pie, 40-Year Old Virgin, etc. Never had a desire to see Billy Madison, so I can't speak to it, but the best Sandler movie I've seen would probably be The Wedding Singer, followed by Happy Gilmore. Monty Python (I assume we're talking about The Holy Grail) definitely still one of the best. Life of Brian less so. Meaning of Life just bad. So there, that's my thoughts for what they're worth. All flames and assessments of my worth as a human and any revocation of my web priviledges will be cheerfully laughed at. And Batspideykong, congratulations on being more mature at 14 than many of the people on these forums are at 55 or whatever the hell they are. (Reply to this) |

DariusVIII writes: on Jun 06 2007 06:42 AM aknddon3, dude you're using sooo many absolutes, painting people and movies in black and white, saying there's only one good opinion to have on a movie and overlooking all those shades of gray when people thought the movie was pretty good or ok. And you can't say other's opinions are void, its a fucking free country you facist bastard!! Also you don't even use proper grammar, unlike our 14 year old friend, who could probably be in college. And still you don't give any valid reasons or any reasons at all why Knocked Up was sooo bad or Animal House was sooo good. I know I've come on to these boards before and hated on you, but you need it man....you think these forums are your own, where no one else can have an opinion, and they're not....people can right, think, and feel whatever the fuck they want. I'll now prepare myself for you rebuttal, which is sure to come quick and harsh, and devoid of any intelligence. (Reply to this) |
|
DariusVIII writes: on Jun 06 2007 06:51 AM Back to the real reason I come on the boards (to talk about movies). I think Young Frankenstein is Mel's best, but it just made me laugh so hard compared to any other movie so I'm bias. Blazing Saddles is definetily in the top tier of comidies too, though. But 40 Year Old, Wedding Crashers, and now apparently Knocked Up (gonna see it Friday) are the new age classic comidies....these movies are so great because they represent our generation: our obsessions with sex, drugs, food and video games, and they do it with such cleverness and flair....that's my opinion, I'll appreciate responses if they're not completely stupid. (Reply to this) |

Ashron writes: on Jun 06 2007 07:03 AM In reply to this comment (#867468) Well, I'm 42, so I would hope I've gained a little bit of maturity through all that, but thanks anyway :-) (Reply to this) |

Ashron writes: on Jun 06 2007 07:08 AM In reply to this comment (#867469) Mel Brooks, hands down. Mainly because his better ones have survived the time test. I have to confess that Apatow is hit or miss with me. I absolutely loved Freaks & Geeks, but that's probably because I was that age at the time the show took place (the final episode where James Franco ends up playing Dungeons and Dragons with the geeks is classic) I found 40-Year-Old Virgin moderately amusing, but not classic. I haven't seen Knocked Up, but I plan to, because I really like Seth Rogen (who would have ever thought he'd be a leading man) So, yeah, Brooks. But that in no way detracts from Apatow, and he has a long career ahead of him. (Reply to this) |

Ashron writes: on Jun 07 2007 06:31 AM In reply to this comment (#867476) Don't count on him listening. I've tried for months with little success. I honestly do think he's bipolar, because sometimes he makes really rational comments, and the other 95% of the time it's his usual nonsensical rantings. It's either that or he's really the god of trolls and knows what he's doing every moment and loves the reaction he gets from riling us all up. See the subtlely of his genius. He hasn't responded for days now and we're still talking about him :-) (Reply to this) |
