"Pirates 3" Trailer is Here! Fun!
by Scott Weinberg | March 20, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

If you missed it during "Dancing with the Stars" and you didn't bother trolling through Yahoo! around midnight last night, you needn't worry. The brand-new (and very stellar) trailer for "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is now ready for consumption. (And then check out this swanky flip-book!) Back to Article

Am I the only 1?
Am I the only one that thought the trailer was just OK? Didn't look like too much is going to happen I couldn't figure out for myself. Plus, no "Holy S***" moments to speak of, except for maybe the cool looking duel between Jack and Davey, but even that isn't really mind-blowing or anything. Am I alone on this?

After seeing "Dead Man's Chest" and now this trailer, all I can say about this series is "meh". Not too impressive and an overreliance on visual effects, both things that contradict the stellar first entry.

Whoa, down fanboy, down. I believe it'll be a lot closer than you're thinking. Spiderman has a few things going for it:
1) It is the first big movie of '07, and people are normally excited for the first big summer movie, which means....
2) If it is any good, it'll do good for two weeks, b/c it has two weeks before Shrek 3 comes out. It has two weeks of minimal competition, whereas...
3) POTC has to deal with Spiderman 3(a franchise that has been the highest grosser in a given year), Shrek 3(another franchise that has been the highest grosser in a given year), Oceans 13 which opens one week after, and Fantastic Four 2, and the fact that if people went to see Shrek and Spiderman, maybe they'll be slow to put MORE money down for POTC.
My prediction? It'll be a close one. Spiderman 3, if good, will put up huge numbers. It'll be the first and only big movie to see for two weeks. It'll be close, but I do think Pirates will out gross Spiderman.

PTOC outdo Spiderman?? Spiderman 3 looks AMAZING! Goblin, Sandman, Venom...can't freaking wait. The only problem with the Spiderman movies so far is there hasn't been enough action, and this one should take care of that problem.

Nah, I feel the same way. That swordfight does look cool, but I'm not expecting much of anything from it, or this movie.

Also, does anyone else get the weird feeling that that trailer's, "End of Pirates" theme sounds a lot like what the MPAA wants to happen. Subliminal messages maaaan! Haha, yeah..

Yes he was, but it was part of the quick cuts at the end of the trailer. According to the Yahoo player I was watching it from, at around 2:17 if you pause it, there he is. I'm not going to say any more, because its kinda spoilerish the way they put him in there... if what I saw was Keith Richards.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That trailer got some good adrenaline pumping, I guess I was one of the few that loved DMC as much as the first one, Jack, Jones and Barbossa are the best. This is the gratest series of movies ever made!

Totally nuts if you think Spiderman is going to be crushed. $350 million total? You're crazy.

Loved Black Pearl.
Hated Dead Man's Chest.

That being said, I was pretty impressed with that trailer. It gave a glimpse of a lot of things that I thought were lacking from the second one.

First off, I think that there was more swordfighting in the this trailer than the entire second movie. Good. I do not consider a sea monster flailing its arms around and killing people to be entertaining. I consider a well choreographed, high stakes sword duel to be exciting.

No more cracken, at least from the trailer. Good.

Character interaction. The second movie SEVERELY lacked any bonding or developing or really anything between the 3 main characters, Elizabeth, Jack, and Will, that is except for the kick ass ending with Jack and Elizabeth and the handcuffs. The trailer looked like it had a lot of scenes with all the gang involved.

Like MyDearestFosca also pointed out - it looks epic. It looks like a serious piece of kick ass action. Sure I love the PotC humor and that needs to be present for a great installment, but Dead Man's Chest was a comedy with action thrown into to facilitate moviegoers. This one looks like a heavy plot driven, swashbuckling adventure.

Midnight show, here I come.

this looks amazing...but i do have to say i dont see how all of these huge movies are going to make it this summer. you have spiderman 3, shrek 3, potc3, fantastic 4, oceans 13. we all know that if any of these fail it will be the last 2. but seriously how do the studios expect 3 of the biggest franchises in movie history to play in the same month...its is stupid...the should be spread out

I think Spiderman is gonna pull it off, only because the second Pirates was lackluster and some people would be turned off by that, not wanting to waste their money on another. Dark horse here is Shrek.

They got Johnny Depp in a pirate movie and in terms of acting talent even though Chow is good, Johnny Depp he ain't.

Are you smoking? Lackluster? Is that why it was one of the highest grossing movies ever? You have no idea what you are talking about.

Dead Man's Chest is a very polarizing film. It was more action than character development, so if you like your booms and bangs as opposed to your "Hey how you doin'?" then it was a good movie. If not, you probably hated it. I preferred the first one, but I thought the second was still pretty good.

And Pirates 3 will make more money than Spiderman 3. Just look at the numbers, DMC made more money at home and abroad over Spiderman 2.

I think "lackluster" refers to the actual quality of the movie, not the revenue.

Box office return does not necessarily correlate with great movies. It's all about the hype. Dead Man's Chest, while it wasn't terrible, just...a step down from the original in my opinion, could have been sh*t on a stick and it would have still been a huge box office success. Hype. It brings in the big chunk of money. The actual quality of the movie brings in the extra sums on top.

spidey will outgross pirates, simply because only about half to 3/4 of pirates audience liked dead mans chest and everyone like spidey 2
