When Captain Jack... Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse. Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with rope-swinging heroes, crusty villains, treasure hoards, swift swordplay, and even wittier wordplay. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott have crafted one of the most clever action-movie scripts in many moons, and this gives the filmmakers and cast (especially Depp) plenty of room to cut loose. Although the skeletal pirates may be a bit frightening for small children, there's lots of humor to temper the scary moments, making PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL a nearly flawless fun film. Depp merece ser indicado ao Oscar por sua performance – afinal, interpretar um matemático esquizofrênico ou um policial corrupto dificilmente envolve tantos riscos quanto o de viver um pirata como Jack Sparrow.

It's just plain insulting to the whole art of creativity to work backwards from a theme park ride to a movie.

... a superior concept that incorporated all the key elements that made the attraction successful... a new franchise for Disney for sequels that won't have to be direct-to-video.

without Depp, this film could easily have been called 'The Curse of the Black Pearl Harbor'

Clocking in at a shockingly long two and a half hours, this campy Evil Dead homage from director Gore Verbinski is nonetheless giddy fun.

Yo ho ho-hum, the ride was better, and shorter. The two main stars of the film are some fantastic visuals and Johnny Depp's performance (which is the saving grace many times over).

Although too good to toss aside, Pirates is as formulaic a movie as you’re likely to see this year.

Buries its treasures -- mainly Johnny Depp in eye shadow and dreads as Captain Jack Sparrow -- in briny clichés.

Not a sunken wreck by any means. At the same time, not quite summer movie treasure.

It's never a good sign when source material is based off of something as flimsy as a theme park thrill ride, but Pirates of the Caribbean works on many cylinders.

[Pirates] might not have a single defining moment of wonderment...[but] it does as a whole tap into the same sensibilities that make you wish you were there.

Johnny Depp rules the roost, and the mainsails, the masts, the bilge, the seas and all challenges on land. ...rascally good fun and an entertainment level Disney can bank on.
