Although aside from the sheer novelty of the pirates, the movie is mediocre.

When Captain Jack... Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse. Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with rope-swinging heroes, crusty villains, treasure hoards, swift swordplay, and even wittier wordplay. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott have crafted one of the most clever action-movie scripts in many moons, and this gives the filmmakers and cast (especially Depp) plenty of room to cut loose. Although the skeletal pirates may be a bit frightening for small children, there's lots of humor to temper the scary moments, making PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL a nearly flawless fun film. Reviews for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black...
Pirates reminds me of a vintage MGM musical, a movie that is more choreographed than directed, and one that serves up good clean fun of the PG-13 variety.
Johnny Depp plays Jack Sparrow as if Errol Flynn were pretending to be Keith Richards.
Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean is a rousing action/adventure yarn highlighted by a truly eccentric performance by Johnny Depp.
The most remarkable thing about Pirates of the Caribbean is neither Johnny Depp's mesmerizing performance, nor ILM's literally eye-popping skeletal ghost-ship crew, but the sheer fact that the movie works at all.
With prissy swagger and loveable bravado, Depp's a pirate captain who steals your heart.
Isn't it about time us adults had our own big, explosively dumb, blustery adventure? If I ain't hearing "Aye, matey, I'm on-board," than stay home and re-watch your arty Citizen Kane, ya boring spoilsport!
At, say, 85 minutes, this would have been a jolly little swashbuckler, but at 143 it turns into an unholy trial.
Buckles swashes, shivers timbers and battens down hatches the way summertime adventures ought to, and its interminable storyline is made up for by its juicy performances.
Pirates of the Caribbean blends its 18th-century look with impressive 21st-century visual effects.
Pirates of the Caribbean is a return to the high seas a la the great adventures of Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks.
If you've often seen this type of summer fare, you might find this movie tedious
An awkward pirate epic that's jampacked with energy, ambition and spectacular effects.
Pirate adventure is a ridiculously entertaining romp thanks to Johnny Depp's scene-stealing scallywag and Gore Verbinski's directorial hand.
Pirates packs great sword fights, incredible stunts, piratical doings, a curse, romance, a parrot and a cunningly evil monkey. I can't think of any reason not to see this movie.
