"The Incredibles" and "The Polar Express," two of this year's effects-heavy films, are out of contention for 2004's Oscar for visual effects, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Instead, the contest will be between seven films: "The Aviator," "Spider-Man 2," "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "The Day After Tomorrow," "I, Robot," and "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow." Out of these seven, three finalists will be chosen and announced on Jan. 25, 2005 when the rest of the nominees for the other categories are also announced.

And the winner is...
Spider-Man 2, if for the elevated train scene and nothing else.

Visual Effects should be like furniture
Spider-Man 2's fx were outstanding, especially the train fight between Spidey and Doc Ock. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is the weakest for me because I was constantly aware of the special effects, which undermines what fx should do in a film, which is to draw you in and capture your interest without bringing attention to themselves -- you don't look at the T-Rex in Jurassic Park and think about what went into the fx, you're just wowed by it. Yet, The Day After Tomorrow had some great moments, too; especially, the wave of water coming down the street and submerging the city. As weak as the film is in many ways, the fx in it were awesome. Overall, a strong competition in this field, I think.

Spiderman 2!!!!
The elevated train sequence and Doc Ock's tentacles (which is the best combination of an actor and cgi i've ever seen in a movie). Spiderman is going to kick ass!

Haven't seen Lemony Snicket yet, but of the rest, I'll go with Spider-Man 2, too. Close behind that is The Day After Tomorrow - lots of great visual fx that I didn't know were fx until I heard the commentary.

i robot or harry potter. i-robot got the least hype but its visual effects i'm sorry to say were far far better then spiderman 2 where i was still aware of everything looking like an effects shot spiderman still looked cartoony

Skycaptain and The Day After Tomorrow will make it. I think Spiderman 2 will be the third choice but I'm not too sure about that.

I think that "Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban", Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" & "Lemoy Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Evests" will get the nods.
