Box Office: Saturday Update - "Mission: Impossible 3" Holds Off "Poseidon"
by RT Staff | May 13, 2006
Discuss Article
Tom Cruise and his IMF spy pals held onto the number one spot on Friday as Mission: Impossible III grossed an estimated $7.6M to begin its second weekend at number one.

The Paramount release dropped 55% from its opening day last Friday which was understandable given that it was an action sequel. Some of Cruise's biggest box office hits like War of the Worlds and the previous Mission films all debuted mid-week over holiday frames so comparing Friday-to-Friday declines would be unfair. However, action films opening on the first weekend of May over the last three years all tumbled by more than 60% on their second Fridays. Over the Friday-to-Sunday period, MI3 is on course to take in $23-25M.

Warner Bros. docked in second place on Friday with its cruise ship disaster flick Poseidon which opened to an estimated $7.2M in its first day of release. The debut was almost identical to the $7.3M opening day gross of last year's big-budget, early summer action film Kingdom of Heaven which went on to collect $19.6M during its opening frame. Poseidon looks to finish the weekend in second place with $19-22M.

Lindsay Lohan's new comedy Just My Luck premiered with an estimated $2M on Friday in its first day in theaters. Fellow freshman Goal! The Dream Begins debuted to an estimated $600,000 on Friday. Weekend tallies should reach $5-6M for Fox's Luck and $2-3M for Buena Vista's Goal!

Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 21% for RV, 39% for An American Haunting, and 33% for United 93.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $24.4M on Friday which was down 16% from a year ago when Monster-in-Law bowed to a Friday gross of $8M on its way to a $23.1M weekend debut.

Well at least MI3 is doing allright, and it sounds like Poseidon will flop just like a bunch of people predicted, sounds like Just My Luck is doing worse than expected too.

trick is to always leave the audience wanting more

advertising, clips, trailers, features, behind the scenes, etc. over exposes it

I can imagine a movie based on the bits and pieces given and make into a better semblance than the actual events that take place in the movie

why go to the movie then

if for each movie the only taste was a 90 second trailer that was carefully compiled and ran on tv and online then that could draw people in more, then it's learned whethor that was good or bad, but mostly it is known before hand now days

Yeah man your totally right. Movies get way overexposed. I think the smartest thing Superman could have done would have beeen to not show anyone anything. If the trailer just had the Superman "S" come on screen then say like "Superman Returns: Coming This Summer" and that was it, thatd be awesome. and then until the movie comes out to not sure any other trailer except that one. I think a trailer totally discreet and general like that would get way more buzz and hype.

It's just like last year's slump. Saying that Cruise bombed is more of an attention-grabber than saying it opened ok, but not great.

people are just looking for a reason to sat that this summer is going to dissapoint. Cmon now u still have the di vinci code, xmen 3, pirates 3, superman, nacho libre, the breakup, miami vice, taladega nights(the will farrell movie). This summer is already starting off better than last year, mi3 is doing solid, poseidon opened to 20 which would had been solid if the bidget wasn't so big (o well theres always the international scene right?).
