Consensus: It plays like an extended episode, but The Powerpuff Girls Movie is still lots of fun.

POWERPUFF GIRLS creator Craig McCracken takes his widely popular characters--Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, and their posse--and kicks it up a few notches with a stylish look that's easy on the eyes and engaging to all audiences. The film begins with a flashback to the POWERPUFF GIRLS' early days, when they were but a glimmer in the eye of their father-creator Professor Plutonium. The three girls--who are cute to the point of distraction--are not the pride of Townsville like they are on TV. They are persecuted as "freaks" because they cannot control their special powers. Who could have predicted that a nuclear-powered game of tag would wreak havoc on Townsville? It's clear that the girls must redeem themselves, so they turn to the evil Mojo Jojo, unaware that he's the evil ape they will come to know and hate later. The animation's retro 1950s lounge-style background art, its impossibly vibrant and often-changing colors, and its eerie 3-D effects create a pleasingly cinematic feel. The result is a deeper, resonating picture. The filmmakers did not abandon the naïve style that gave the original POWERPUFF GIRLS television show its trademark charm, making the movie all the better. As a whole, the film is not as quickly paced as its parts, but the adventure is great fun nonetheless.

You start to realize that the filmmakers simply didn't have enough material to deliver a feature-length film and have tried to pad things out as best they can.

That its heroes are adorable, bug-eyed little girls lends some charm and probably feels empowering to its young audience.

It's a prime example of raw visual energy hitched up to the toy rocketship of popular art.

The Powerpuff Girls arrive on the big screen with their super-powers, their super-simple animation and their super-dooper-adorability intact.

What's really so appealing about the characters is their resemblance to everyday children.

It's great fun, turning sci-fi and kiddie-show conventions upside down with a hip wink, but even with more time to go deeper with a plot line, there's not quite enough here to make it special enough for moviegoing.

Jam-packed with perils and parodies, "PowerPuff" will be best-appreciated by moviegoers with a high tolerance for mayhem and unrestrained goofiness. ...It's Saturday morning TV meets "Saturday Night Live."

Half enjoyable goof, half an uncomfortable panorama of urban terrorism that just doesn't sit well after Sept. 11.

Those new to the series ... as well as the already committed, will dig the anarchic Chicks Rule attitude and the snazzy art.

Is it just me or are you also getting really tired of opportunistic studios turning their television cartoons into mediocre movies with no ideas behind them other than stretching out the length?
