Sent to eliminate a gun-running camp in Central America, United States Major Dutch Schaeffer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his commandos get more than they bargained for when they cross paths with a mysterious assassin. As members of their unit begin to disappear, Dutch, Dillon (Carl Weathers), and Blain (Jesse Ventura) conclude that whatever is hunting them is not of this earth. Every attempt at a tactical defense is a defeated for Dutch and company and it is only in the last stretch of their race to safety that their suspicions are confirmed and they encounter the alien nimrod face to face. A summer box office smash, 1987's PREDATOR re-ignited an old trend of movies depicting aliens invading earth that began decades earlier with films like WAR OF THE WORLDS and INVADERS FROM MARS. McTiernan does a miraculous job of directing the "invisible" Predator. Furthermore, the special effects, which are stunningly subtle and never boisterous, make PREDATOR a strikingly contemporary sci-fi effort even amid today's techno-thrillers. [More]

Reviews for Predator
With its stilted dialogue and hammy acting, the film has the look of an expensive production but the feel of a B movie, delivering the sort of undemanding monster mayhem Arnie's fans have come to expect.
The scariest thing about Predator is that its lead actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is currently serving as governor of California.
An unpleasant action thriller that's about as thrilling as watching a fixed fight in the pro wrestling circuit.
A dumber version of the Alien franchise, but this initial picture works anyway, as an atmospheric exercise in pure, primal action with a science-fiction-y twist. [Blu-Ray]
Oddly, the special effects have dated quite well, and the action scenes -- shot by relative newcomer John McTiernan -- work well, despite a few clunky spots.
Even with the rise of the governator, the complicated case made by Predator -- against mainstream movie violence, CIA shenanigans and U.S. imperialism -- perseveres.
Easily one of Schwarzenegger's best action movies, Predator represents one of the 80s' best all-around shoot 'em up sci-fi thrillers.
...a straightforward, old-fashioned action romp, devoid of much interior feeling, humor, or characterization whatever; but it's a pretty good action romp, so who cares.
It is so lean, so exciting and so imaginative that you can watch it every month or two, year in and year out, and never get tired of it.
