The real mystery is not whether there's corruption in the NYPD (that's revealed quickly), but what made the gifted Farrell, Voight and Norton appear in utterly formulaic policier about torn loyalties, done by Lumet and most recently by Mangold and Gray

I think director Gavin O'Connor intended this to be grim and upsetting, but at best it's pulpy entertainment, a watchable series of well-worn, well-executed cliches.
