Assisted by such seasoned pros as Julie Andrews and Hector Elizondo (a Marshall regular), Hathaway shines here in her first major film role. She plays Mia, a high school misfit who has resigned herself to social invisibility. Mia and her best friend, Lilly (Heather Matarazzo), are outcasts. While Lilly relishes the role, Mia just wishes a cute popular boy she likes, Josh (Erik von Detten), would notice her. Mia's life changes dramatically when her grandmother (Andrews) contacts her and Mia finds out she is heir to the throne of Genovia, a small European country between France and Spain. The klutzy, socially awkward girl doesn't think she's up to the job, but she agrees to be coached in regal manners by her grandmother before deciding if she wants to become a princess. Marshall (PRETTY WOMAN) is clearly in his element directing this light, charming teen comedy. Andrews, perfectly cast as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, makes her character seem both imperious and caring. Hathaway's performance and the presence of teen pop star Mandy Moore assure that young girls, in particular, will enjoy the film. [More]

Reviews for The Princess Diaries
Gooey, glossy and girly, it's also a sweet and charming Cinderella story.
The Princess Diaries can be quickly summed up as a series of bland vignettes about a 15 year-old girl's makeover as if directed by an 80 year old man.
Amounts to a [Pretty Woman] sequel with a gangly teenager replacing the hooker with a heart of gold.
It's easy to suspend, or at least relax, critical capacties in the name of good, wholesome fun.
A refreshingly -- but not aggressively -- reformist fairy tale that doesn't talk down to its audience.
It has a premise fraught with potential, but that potential goes largely unfulfilled due to a curious timidity by the filmmakers.
It would probably best be reserved for a gals' matinee out... it's like 'Cinderella' in modern dress.
Gina Wendkos' screenplay dutifully installs roadblocks in Mia's path, but her future as princess is never in doubt; it's in her training where the comedy should lie, but virtually never does.
A film that will drive you nuts because the momentum of happiness is soured too much by idiot plots, bad writing and too much wasted time on supporting actors in feeble subplots.
The Princess Diaries is a sweet and absurd little fairy tale that should play better to its demographic than Marshall's reprehensible Pretty Woman.
You can take your 5-year-old and her great-grandmother, and they'll both enjoy the picture just as much as you do.
"The Princess Diaries" just gives a high gloss sheen to a perfectly average piece of Disney live action entertainment.
