While protecting his village from a rampaging boar-god, the warrior Ashitaka (Billy Crudup) is cursed with a rapidly spreading scar that threatens to end his life. Seeking a cure and a reason for the animal-god's attack, he journeys into the sacred depths of the Great Forest Spirit's realm. On the edge of this once serene forest, however, the Tatara clan have begun to destroy the surrounding land to produce iron. In retaliation, San (Claire Danes), the adopted daughter of the wolf-god Moro (Gillian Anderson), has begun raiding the Tatara fortress to stop their encroachment. Soon Ashitaka is caught in the middle and must stop the war between the humans and the forest dwellers before they destroy each other. Miyazaki, who was personally responsible for 80,000 of the film's 144,000 hand drawings, uses the story's lush feudal setting as a character unto itself, filling the screen with vast mountainous landscapes and gorgeous wooded glens that recall his early film, NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND. The film also features battle sequences that are reminiscent of the stunning live action warfare in Akira Kurosawa's RAN. The startlingly fluid movements of these mythological characters are detailed far beyond any other hand-animated production, easily making this one of the most spectacular animated films ever made. Reviews for Princess Mononoke
The movie has a scope that makes Hollywood's homiletic, follow - your - dream fables look even more solipsistic.
Here is a film that reaches for unforeseen heights, and surpasses them.
Boldly innovative yet eerily innocent, Princess Mononoke is unlike anything you've seen in the theaters this year.
Its impressive animation and fluid action sequences make it more than a passable two plus hours, but it never becomes the great achievement it could -- and perhaps should -- have been.
There is no denying the film's visual imagination, from the awe-inspiring creature creations to the stunning forest landscapes to the sensitive human characterizations.
Even more mundane subjects are so gorgeously rendered that the film as a whole must be called a work of true art.
Sheer technical virtuosity aside, where Miyzaki succeeds most enduringly is in his willingness to grant audiences their most basic intellectual due.
This is clearly not a movie for kids under 10, as decapitations and maimings aren't that uncommon and the story is detailed, filled with subplots, and low on cookie-cutter characters and cutesy sidekicks.
I was somewhat disappointed by the mundane story it presented, but the fashion in which it presented it made it completely worthwhile.
The 135 minutes that Miyazaki takes to put across his many motifs are deserved considering the complexity of his task and the movie, which avoids repetition despite the many battles, does not fail to entertain.
Princess Mononoke is a complex, superbly rendered, and wildly eccentric anime.
Unlike most animated motion pictures, which have a relatively limited scope, Princess Mononoke is an epic saga, a fantasy adventure of great ambition and extent.
Even if you lose track of the story -- and it is sometimes a challenge to keep up with all the developments -- the movie's steady flow of exotic, powerful images remains riveting.
Epic, mythic, simply terrific, Princess Mononoke brings a new kind of animation experience to the American moviegoing mainstream.
Strange and powerful, Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke sets a new standard in animation.
Hayao Miyazaki has crafted a very intelligent story about the co-existence of humans and the forest.
A haunting, beautiful film that holds your attention despite its length and its complex plot.
