Barrie's popular play stars Katherine Hepburn as Phoebe Throssel. Set in England during the early 19th Century, the film concerns the 20-year-old woman's passion for her admirer, Dr. Valentine Brown (Franchot Tone). When he announces that he's enlisting to fight against Napoleon because he has no close attachments, Phoebe and her sister Susan (Fay Bainter) are heartbroken. They both become schoolteachers, and make do with a drab existence. Ten years later, Valentine returns, and comes to ask Phoebe to a homecoming ball. But upon meeting her, he no longer recognizes her. She looks so worn out and her dress is so plain. Devastated, Phoebe immediately changes into a stunning gown and restyles her hair. When Valentine returns to collect her, he again fails to recognize her, and Phoebe claims that she's Livvy, Phoebe's niece, and accompanies him to the ball. Once there, Phoebe-Livvy soon becomes a magnet for male attention, putting Valentine at something of a disadvantage. An entertaining period piece, QUALITY STREET is well-directed by Stevens with yet another wonderful performance from Hepburn. [More]

Given the cast and the director, this is very disappointing.

The excellent costumes and photography, and a superb rendering of gardens in London are far better than the story or the acting.

Even the film's star Katharine Hepburn said she found it repulsive.
