Consensus: Rat Race moves from one sight gag to another, but only a handful of them are genuinely funny.

In the tradition of Zucker's AIRPLANE and NAKED GUN 2-1/2: THE SMELL OF FEAR, this film features wild chase scenes, slapstick comedy, sight gags, impossible situations, and zany characters. Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Lovitz, Rowan Atkinson, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Seth Green, and Breckin Meyer star as the lucky winners of special tokens in the slot machines at a Las Vegas casino. Casino owner John Cleese informs them that they are invited to participate in a race: the first of them to reach Silver City, New Mexico, will receive the $2 million cash prize. To make things interesting, there are no rules, which leads to the commandeering of a bus, a run-in with Nazis, the use of a high-speed experimental car, and revenge on a cheating boyfriend--And that's just the beginning. In the meantime, the participants are really part of a bigger plan: high rollers are betting on which of them will win the cash. Watch for brief appearances by Kathy Bates, Dean Cain, and Wayne Knight. Also starring Amy Smart, Kathy Najimy, Lanai Chapman, and Vince Vieluf. [More]

You have to wonder about the mentality of anyone who would want to use the "Cannonball Run" pictures as inspiration.

When I saw it, I didn't laugh more than three times. But in recalling the film now, it seems a lot funnier.

There are a few clever moments, but the movie is nothing at all special and a pale, pale, pale, pale imitation of its model.

A few decent running gags ... and an ocean of bad ones.

A comedy like Rat Race works only when viewers can -- or want to -- identify with the underdogs on screen.

Goes for fast and dumb, and dammit if it doesn't connect dead-on with the funnny bone.

A mixed bag that's a perfect fit for this summer of mediocrity.

...a handful of downright hilarious moments, another dozen chuckles and about 60 dead-on-arrival comedic misfires.

These people, and the actors who play them, work so very hard that just watching them tires you out.

A few gags are too inspired for Rat Race to be lumped in with the recent spate of wretched comedies. But it also includes too many broad, shrill and gratuitously vulgar moments to be defended without apologies.

The sight gags are too few and far between and the characters, in varying degrees, all seem pale refugees from sitcomland.

...this film earns its laughs. Sure, there are some jokes that involve bodily functions, but at no point does anyone get a penis stabbed into the side of their head.
