It is outrageous, cheerfully vulgar, undeniably lowbrow, and very, very funny.

Consensus: Rat Race moves from one sight gag to another, but only a handful of them are genuinely funny.

In the tradition of Zucker's AIRPLANE and NAKED GUN 2-1/2: THE SMELL OF FEAR, this film features wild chase scenes, slapstick comedy, sight gags, impossible situations, and zany characters. Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Lovitz, Rowan Atkinson, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Seth Green, and Breckin Meyer star as the lucky winners of special tokens in the slot machines at a Las Vegas casino. Casino owner John Cleese informs them that they are invited to participate in a race: the first of them to reach Silver City, New Mexico, will receive the $2 million cash prize. To make things interesting, there are no rules, which leads to the commandeering of a bus, a run-in with Nazis, the use of a high-speed experimental car, and revenge on a cheating boyfriend--And that's just the beginning. In the meantime, the participants are really part of a bigger plan: high rollers are betting on which of them will win the cash. Watch for brief appearances by Kathy Bates, Dean Cain, and Wayne Knight. Also starring Amy Smart, Kathy Najimy, Lanai Chapman, and Vince Vieluf. [More]

Reviews for Rat Race
Goes for fast and dumb, and dammit if it doesn't connect dead-on with the funnny bone.
Starts off with a mildly humorous tone and then unexpectedly ramps up to a full-blown gut buster.
Instead of delivering the equivalent of an Airplane!, Jerry Zucker has made a monstrosity more akin to a plane crash.
It is drecky, dull-headed comedy, all pratfalls and wild hair and poop jokes.
Race, which delights in bashing all manner of transportation, hits its silly stride early and never shifts into a higher gear.
It's a mad mad mad mad world, all right, and Rat Race makes it seem all the zanier.
Rat Race is much funnier than most comedies currently in release -- compared with American Pie 2 ... But ultimately it falls just short of the finish line.
Seems designed for kids who won't get about a third of the jokes. Or maybe for the quirky kids who think that Hitler gags require, as a punch line, lesbian bikers.
A comedy like Rat Race works only when viewers can -- or want to -- identify with the underdogs on screen.
A scoopful of slapstick silliness that runs refreshingly counter to the bodily fluids and gross-out humor that dominate film comedy today.
Despite the laughs and a script that moves briskly from one joke to the next, the actors (all talented in their own righta) don't work together as a team to create a compelling story.
These people, and the actors who play them, work so very hard that just watching them tires you out.
Rat Race isn't a stupid movie -- it's an aggressively stupid movie that journeys into realms of absurdity that are, well, aggressively funny.
