Consensus: Rat Race moves from one sight gag to another, but only a handful of them are genuinely funny.

In the tradition of Zucker's AIRPLANE and NAKED GUN 2-1/2: THE SMELL OF FEAR, this film features wild chase scenes, slapstick comedy, sight gags, impossible situations, and zany characters. Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Lovitz, Rowan Atkinson, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Seth Green, and Breckin Meyer star as the lucky winners of special tokens in the slot machines at a Las Vegas casino. Casino owner John Cleese informs them that they are invited to participate in a race: the first of them to reach Silver City, New Mexico, will receive the $2 million cash prize. To make things interesting, there are no rules, which leads to the commandeering of a bus, a run-in with Nazis, the use of a high-speed experimental car, and revenge on a cheating boyfriend--And that's just the beginning. In the meantime, the participants are really part of a bigger plan: high rollers are betting on which of them will win the cash. Watch for brief appearances by Kathy Bates, Dean Cain, and Wayne Knight. Also starring Amy Smart, Kathy Najimy, Lanai Chapman, and Vince Vieluf. [More]

Has just enough in it for me to recommend the film -- but not enough to give the film an above average rating.

A few gags are too inspired for Rat Race to be lumped in with the recent spate of wretched comedies. But it also includes too many broad, shrill and gratuitously vulgar moments to be defended without apologies.

C'mon. Cite one skit this year that's funnier than the one featuring Jon Lovitz's theft of Hitler's car.

There is such a Love Boat thing going on here, with all the washed up celebrities being brought together in an attempt to equal one star, that it makes you start feeling sea sick.

A woebegone attempt at an ensemble farce which Paramount Pictures could label 'guaranteed laugh-free' without the slightest danger of a lawsuit.

A great goofy delight, a dandy mix of energetic performances, inspired sight gags and flat-out silliness.

As in Mad, Mad World, the comic actors fare much better than the straight ones.

...a handful of downright hilarious moments, another dozen chuckles and about 60 dead-on-arrival comedic misfires.

An uncomfortable comment on the desperate-to-be-cast nature of the second-tier Hollywood actor.

It's basically a matter of the characters being humorous or not, and most just weren't for me.

Rat Race has swell stunts and special effects and enough laughs of all kinds to recover from its less successful episodes.
