"Ratatouille" Tops RT's Mid-Year Report!

Seth Rogen, you had a good run.

For several months, "Knocked Up," Rogen's dirty-sweet rom com, was bearer of the "Best-Reviewed Wide Release of 2007" crown. The award, however, now goes to "Ratatouille." In fact, the Pixar flick currently sits atop Rotten Tomatoes' Mid-Year Report, our new countdown detailing the 25 best-reviewed (and 10 worst) films of 2007.

The parameters for making the top 25: have a limited or wide release within January through June, gather at least 50 reviews and a fresh Tomatometer, and reinvent cinema as we know it (or, at least, give us our ten bucks worth). To make it on the 10 worst list, simply have an Oscar-winning actress be the star. (Diane Keaton! Hilary Swank! Halle Berry! All in terrible movies!)

The top 25 best-reviewed movies highlights what a varied year 2007's been so far. While the essential art flicks ("Red Road") and documentaries ("Sicko," "Into Great Silence") are accounted for, there are also the surprise critical hits like "Grindhouse" and "Live Free or Die Hard."

With a 96 percent Tomatometer after 150+ reviews, "Ratatouille" emerges as the clear winner. It's not only the best-reviewed wide release, but best-reviewed of any movie released in 2007 so far. Do any of your faves make the list? Check out the Mid-Year Report here!

Am I the only one who gets a little annoyed with these lists that Rotten Tomatoes does? Or more precisely, the format. Who on earth has the time or patience to click through 25 pages to see the top 25 movies, let alone those top 100 lists? I'm guessing it's simply a ploy to increase their page count or something like that. I'd love to see some of these lists, but as actual lists, not as an on-line novel.

For the top 100 lists you're absolutely right. I don't necessarily mind the top 10 being like that, but having to click through 100 pages is just a little ridiculous! Mind you, a lot of the lists RT has been publishing lately, are pretty laughable... perhaps they should only include movies released since RT's inception, otherwise it's a ridiculous method of comparison.

I don't know, I sort of like these lists. Helps you learn which movies to watch or which ones to avoid. I've never been bothered by the format, but I guess you all do have a point. Not everyone has time to cruise leisurely through a Top 100 List like me.

well, i guess there's no acounting for taste on here anymore. rat suxs, i think all u brad bird drones need to get off ur high horse and realize this is the WEAKEST AND WORST pixar film to-date. Numbers dont lie, im sorry to tell u this. Bring on WALL-E, now THATS going to be an awesome pixar film

Also, I was looking through the best of 2006 and I'm wondering where Pan's Labyrinth is. Did I miss it, or did it somehow not meet criteria for that list? Because whatever score you judge it by, it still has a higher score than most of the 2006 movies.

Also, Ratatouille was fantastic. I haven't seen The Iron Giant, rather enjoyed The Incredibles, and don't really care much either way about Brad Bird. My opinion is pretty much unbiased and I still thought it was amazing. Sorry starscream.

Ratatouille is the 2nd best Pixar movie (behind The Incredibles). But it has two problems:

1) It's not a movie for little kids. It's intellectual level is way too high for a bunch of toddlers to enjoy. Anyboy with a high-school education absolutely loves the movie, but I saw little kids just sit at the movie in a blind confusion.

2) Competition is way too high this year. It came out at the same time as Live Free or Die Hard, which sucked away at least a third of its potential income, IMO. Then, less than a week later, Transformers killed it, and another week later Harry Potter seeled the coffin.

If Pixar had timed Ratatouille's release better, maybe just a week earlier, it would have made a much greater impression on the movie-going world. Alas, it was crushed, and DVD release might not even help, since kids don't even like the movie. Correction. Kids don't "get" the movie. But I do, and it's darn near perfect.

I saw Ratatouille and it wasn't that great... The short film in the beginning of the movie was funnier than Ratatouille. It wasn't that funny... An yeah, little kids didn't laugh at all. They laughed more for the coming attraction trailers, the short film and the part where that Ego critic in the movie flashes back to his childhood.

What is this belief that all Pixar movies have to have you laughing hysterically to be good? I saw this in a professional review and now this guy^ is faulting Ratatouille for the same thing. Can't you just enjoy the movie for its well-done story and superb animation?

Wow...I seem to have missed quite a few great movies. I have some catching up to do. And I'm glad I didn't waste my time with those 10 Worst. I could tell those were bad without the reviews though.

A couple observations of those that I did see. Ratatouille, I thought, was pretty dull. I also thought the short film was more entertaining. However, I think I just might be growing out of these movies. I didn't see cars, but I also disliked The Incredibles. Pity, because I liked all the other Pixar films prior to that one.

Also, why is Rescue Dawn not on this list? Is that because it was completed last year? Can we please drum up more support for this movie? It is literally the best movie I've seen all year (so far).

Ratatouille is probably the first real film that reaches intellectual highs so it may be a little high brow and slow for some but it was a great experience for me. I'm more impressed now with what Pixar animation is capable of and I hope they continue the trend.
