Real-life brothers Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez star in this biopic about the Mitchell brothers, two of the pioneers in the porn industry. Brothers Artie (Sheen) and Jim (Estevez) produced some of the 1970s most popular porn features such as BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR and launched the careers of numerous porn stars. Unfortunately, as the brothers became more and more successful and their lives became devoted to the excesses common to the seventies, their animosity towards one another became so great that their relationship ended in murder. A hugely entertaining expose on the porn industry during the seventies on the order of BOOGIE NIGHTS, RATED X is an impressive effort from director Estevez. [More]

The film inevitably streamlines and neatens up the Mitchell's spectacularly messy lives. But for anyone who missed the short but influential era of porno chic, it's an eye-opener, a primer on how we got here from there.

The brother angle does give this story a distinctive dimension, and the brothers Estevez and Sheen, their pates shaved to help them represent the odd-looking Mitchells, do an uncanny, genuinely impressive job.

Intriguing, but Sheen and Estevez are not good enough to engross the viewer.

...this just isn't an interesting story, with the Mitchell brothers making for truly unsympathetic protagonists.

It took extraordinary caution to make a film this boring from the Mitchell Brothers' story.
