Average Rating:7.7/10

Consensus: Perfectly compositing humor and horror, the only thing more effective than Re-Animator's gory scares are its dry, deadpan jokes.

Runtime: 86 mins

Genre: Horror/Suspense

Synopsis: Herbert West (Jeffery Combs) has found the secret to eternal life--or so he thinks. West needs fresh cadavers to continue his experiments in the re-animation of dead tissue, so he enlists the help... Herbert West (Jeffery Combs) has found the secret to eternal life--or so he thinks. West needs fresh cadavers to continue his experiments in the re-animation of dead tissue, so he enlists the help of young medical student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) to steal bodies from the local morgue. Despite all the warning signs of failure, the eccentric West's research continues. The results are crazed zombies that roam the streets, severed heads that talk, murder, madness, and chaos, all in the name of science, of course. Director Stuart Gordon's film debut, an adaptation of the short story by H.P. Lovecraft, is a masterpiece of ghoulish fun. Graphic special effects, good scripting, and perfectly over-the-top performances make RE-ANIMATOR a classic horror film in the tradition of THE EVIL DEAD and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. [More]

The plot... took a genre obsessed with masked killers, monsters et al, completely by storm.

The injection of humour into HP Lovecraft's 1922 tale is what saves this splatterfest from being mere fodder for gorehounds.

It's so politically incorrect that there is no way anyone would be able to make it today.

It's sweet when a classic lives up to its legend, isn't it?

This is one of the greatest films ever made. Period. It's outrageous, erotic, gory, jaw-dropping, genre-busting ,shocking, and altogether exhilarating filmmaking.

In its best moments, the film itself practically leaps off the screen.

Stuart Gordon doesn't just push the envelope of good taste with this one; he tears right through it.

While Re-Animator fails as a faithful adaptation of Lovecraft, it is an incredibly demented movie in its own right that combines a plethora of downright disgusting grand guignol with disturbing black humor.

It's this kind of flat-footed stuff that gives garbage a bad name.

Pic has a grisly sense of humor, and sometimes is so gross and over the top the film tips over into a bizarre comedy.

Re-Animator was Stuart Gordon's first (and best) movie.

Re-Animator exploits our fears of segmentation, of being many fragments of a body living independently.
