Consensus: Though basically a TV cartoon stretched out to movie-length, Recess has enough successful jokes and smart writing to make it a worthwhile view.

Former principal Dr. Benedict, who once tried to eliminate recess from the school day, now plans to use a laser beam to alter the weather and create permanent winter. It sure would be tough to have to go to school year-round, so T.J. calls in all his friends for help. Just when the kids appear to be facing their final test of strength against the mad principal, the faculty joins together to help save summer vacation. -- © 2001 Disney [More]

Although it lacks the zany exuberance of the recent Rugrats in Paris, it's fast-footed and fun.

The fun and freckled stars are a hoot for the little ones when they break into the school to stop a former principal who's lost his principles.

Great fun, particularly for kids used to that satirically hard-edged kind of kid show, stuff like Rugrats.

Some of the jokes are cute, and the plot ... is admirably convoluted.

The deadly combo of leaden animation, sorry scriptwriting, and limp pacing throttle every attempt at humor.

Perhaps Recess' most culturally savvy element is its skewering of the '60s.
