Kevin Smith Finishes Red State Script
Color us intrigued.
by Jeff Giles | September 04, 2007
Discuss Article
Kevin Smith fans, take notice: the director's much-discussed horror project now has its script.

The film -- titled Red State, and on track to start production after Smith's next comedy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno -- was first reported on by our RT-UK brethren back in April, when Smith divulged several plot points (click here to read the full article). In what was perhaps the most telling quote, Smith cautioned fans to expect the unexpected:

It's weird because for a few months I've been saying 'horror movie' and technically it is, but it's also not a very traditional horror movie in the sense that people have been asking me, 'Is it a slasher movie? Is it like the Japanese horror flicks?' It'd be much easier to just show it to them when I'm done and be like, 'This is what I meant.' At which point I'm sure there'll be people saying, 'This ain't a horror movie!' But to me, it is.

Now, over at SilentBobSpeaks, Smith brings word that the Red State script is done:

Totally different than anything I've written before...Shortest script I've ever written, too, as well as the least dialogue-driven (not to say there's not a lot of dialogue in it still; just not nearly as much as I'm used to writing). It's a weird, relentlessly bleak and extremely unsettling affair...

For more on the story's completion -- and, it must be said, plenty of Smith's usual colorful language -- click through to the link below.

Anything Kevin Smith does is always worth seeing at least once.

Jersey Girl, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back weren't worth seeing even once...

I would have to disagree with you. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Jersey Girl.

Jersey Girl wasn't horrible... but it wasn't great. A little too conventional really (trying to go commercial?). Chasing Amy is a masterwork. Jay and Silent Bob was a total miss. His new movies sound pretty cool though. After Clerks 2 he should be nice and confident and not worried about losing his mojo or what have you.

Given the films's title and the fact that Smith says it is a horror movie but not in the traditional sense, is this gonna be some republicans-are-monsters satire type thing? I sure hope not, not because of my political views, but because Smith always falters and comes of preachy and heavy-handed when he tries to do such things. Sometimes they work in bits here and there as quick trow-away commentary, but a whole movie stretching the same tired joke... yeesh. Again, I hope not. It might be funny for a while, but the jokes have all been done. After a while it will feel like he's just preaching to the choir and jerking himself off. But, I'm just judging a book by its cover. Hope I'm wrong.

jersey girl wasnt very good, i thought Jay and Silent Bob was hilarious but it was mostly an in-joke movie so if you werent familiar with his previous work I can see how it wouldnt be as funny. For me, I like Smith and liked all his movies (especially Chasing Amy, by far his best) but Mallrats and Jersey Girl. But a kevin smith horror does sound interesting.

I too like Jersey Girl. It's not typical Kevin Smith dick and fart joke movie, but I thought it was kinda sweet and that scene where Ben yells at the little girl made me want to cry. I actually believed he was that angry. Affleck gets a bad rap as an actor as well.

Kevin Smith movies are crap. Clerks 2 was a piece of crap. The dialogue is poorly written, you can practically hear his voice.
The guy is full of himself, and likes the smell of his own farts.

Well what can I say? Ever watch An Evening with Kevin Smith? I had to sit through that with a friend, and he was so full of himself and smug the whole time. I can never get over how fake he is. Chasing Amy is a good film, but the rest are pretty much crap.

Uh... actually, as even a moderator on this site went as far to point out, previously, that Kevin Smith is one of the most self-depreciating directors around today. Smith will be the first one to tell you what a hack he is, how bad his movies are, and he's always the first to make fun of himself.

Uh...actually,
I don't buy it. At all. There's self deprecation, and then there's self deprecation that a person uses to shield himself from any real deprecation.
You honestly don't find Smith to be the least bit smug? Watch An Evening with Kevin Smith.

Jersey Girl was okay. Chasing Amy was his best. I didn't really like Clerks 2. And he is a jerk. But thats forgiven.
