Summary

It's been around since 1981 -- making it older than a number of our readers -- but the Wolfenstein series of games is still going strong, and after over five years in development, a film adaptation appears to finally be moving forward: Variety reports that the big-screen version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein has got itself a producer, director, and screenwriter. Return To Castle Wolfenstien is probably my favorite video game ever. Now that that's out there, I can go on and tell that the story of RTCW was never the strong point of the game, it was the online Multiplayer (a la Halo 2, even though i disagree with the statement that Halo 2's story sucked.) that made it big/fun. I must of spent more time playing that game online then I did with my family. There was just no way to describe how much fun the multiplayer was. Now that that's said, I don't think a movie version of this licence will work(Praying to God it does).

The fact that there isn't really a story to the game gives the writer freedom to come up with something original (hopefully)!

I think it all hinges on BJ. If they can put together a character that has a strong presence without a lot of backstory or psychological development - like Snake Plissken or Bruce Campbell's Ashe - the rest should fall easily into place.

In my opinion, most other dark fantasy video game movies have failed because they get caught up in the psychobabble and spirituality and morally questionable science... and in all other ways try to swim in the waters of serious science fiction without either the talent or the patience to do it right. But Wolfenstein is unapologetically a bunch of Nazi conspiracy hooey. If the filmmakers keep the right spirit of fun, is has all the makings of a pulp fiction gem like They Live, or Commando, or even Goldfinger if they really nail it. And if they don't... I could care less. I love the Return to Castle Wolfenstein single player game just the way it is. No movie could possibly do what it does better - only differently.

So, I guess it's save to assume that in a few years every comic book, video game, and book will have a movie of it and people will have to go back to writing non-adapted original screenplays once again.

I think this movie will be awesome because of how good Doom was and the fact that it will be PG-13 to make more money and full of cheap bad CGI and dumb action. That screams awesome to me.

I think Roger Avary is a great director, so I'm looking forward to this. And yeah I was definitely hoping that he would make Glamorama next but oh well. I never have played the games so I don't really have expectations to be met.

I wasn't familiar with Avery before now, but his filmography is not to be sneezed at. I liked his quote at Variety: %u201CIt%u2019s time to bust some dams, storm some bunkers and blow up some bridges.%u201D

So far, so good. Of course, we got this far with Halo too...

One might assume that he's talented based upon a first glance at his filmography but in reality all Avery has done to get his start is leach off Quentin Tarintino. This is much more apparent in his later projects. Still, LMAO kudos to the Hitler biomech armor comment.
