Dick Miller plays a brutally honest drifter named Shorty, who gets kicked out of a club where the Platters are performing (they sing "I'm Sorry" and "He's Mine"). He then drifts over to Al's bar, where the Blockbusters perform more songs. (They also sing the title track.) Mel Welles is Sir Bop, a jive-spouting beatnik and would-be rock manager who gets his stage-shy client Julie (Abby Dalton) to sing "The Great Pretender" for Al and his patrons. (Nora Hayes dubs her singing voice.) Shorty tells her she's terrible, but Sir Bop thinks she's the "tip-top troposcope of the flip." Other guests that fateful evening include a boxer (Beach Dickerson), his wife (Barboura Morris), and a couple of murdering crooks played by Jonathan Haze and Russell Johnson (the Professor from GILLIGAN'S ISLAND). When they're recognized by a witness, the crooks pull out pistols and hold everyone hostage. They didn't reckon with tough little Shorty, though, a refreshing character that Miller inhabits brilliantly. All in all, ROCK ALL NIGHT is typically fun, no-frills Corman, and there's nothing wrong with that. [More]
