Consensus: Like its title, Rock Star is rather generic, being not so much about the heavy metal scene than about rock cliches and formula.

Mark Wahlberg plays Chris Cole, a local guy from Pittsburgh who is a copy-machine repairman by day (still living at home), and the lead singer of Blood Pollution, a Steel Dragon tribute band, at night. (Steel Dragon is a heavy-metal hair band living it big in the 1980s.) Cole prides himself on getting everything exactly right when he's onstage, every note, every costume, every shade of mascara; he even gets a nipple ring right after Steel Dragon's lead singer does. Chris's dream turns into reality when Steel Dragon fires its lead singer and brings Chris in to audition for the job. He gets the gig, but he also gets a lot more than he bargained for. Wahlberg is brilliant as Cole, playing the role to perfection, both as the young dreamer and the rock star living to excess. Jennifer Aniston is also excellent as Emily, his longtime girlfriend and manager who stands by him for as long as she can. The music nails the 1980s heavy-metal explosion, both in the original songs that Steel Dragon plays and the incidental music, from such groups as Kiss, Jon Bon Jovi, Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Motley Crue, and Dio. As good as Wahlberg and Aniston are, Timothy Spall, as Steel Dragon's manager, nearly steals the picture. ROCK STAR is an invigorating, intoxicating, thrilling ride of a movie; at times it even feels like it's the true story behind Spinal Tap. (In fact, it is loosely based on the true story of Ripper Owens and Judas Priest.) As an added bonus, the film features, in small roles, musicians who have played with such metalheads as Dokken, Slaughter, Ozzy Osbourne, and more. [More]

Reviews for Rock Star
Sex with Jennifer Aniston, or sex with hundreds of underage, wild, horny groupies? Hmmm ... now there's a tough decision I wouldn't mind making.
A minor pleasure, with a strong first half, a tepid second half and a hell of a performance from Mark Wahlberg.
Rock Star is a good idea for a movie, and is well executed with solid acting, music and production values.
It has a comical sense of history and seems perfectly aware that it is recounting a myth.
Herek's direction is flat and doggedly unexceptional; he gets the job done, but barely.
A fun, uplifting, well-paced movie with a solid central showing by Wahlberg and energetic live performances
If you've seen VH1 Behind the Music, you've already seen this movie - a hundred times.
A movie about the gullible and pitched to the naive, Rock Star struggles to resist being as generic as its title, but is never more than just another replay of the hoary postulate that showbiz is all about rising, falling and being redeemed.
Becomes another tired cautionary tale of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll.
Basically 'Behind the Music' meets 'A Star is Born'...no less shamelessly perfervid than the one and even more mawkish and schmaltzy than the other.
Perhaps, the original screenplay called for a three-hour film ... a mini-epic like "Almost Famous"
An affectionate romantic drama made by and for people in love with music.
Generally plays itself out with the plodding, high-decibel predictability of a Steel Dragon ballad.
This may be the most innocuous R-rated movie ever made, a film that turns rock 'n' roll, circa the mid-1980s, into a Disneyland ride.
I am recommending Rock Star as I would recommend a comic book or light reading material -- enjoy it and forget it.
Even though it's weak in the final stages, Rock Star has more than enough sparkle to last you.
