Sadie flirts innocently with her wealthy employer, Mike (played by Crawford's future husband, Franchot Tone), but truly loves her local sweetheart, Tommy Wallace (Gene Raymond). When Tommy leaves for New York, Sadie follows him but is quick to discover him in the arms of a vaudeville showgirl (Esther Ralston). Down on her luck and devastated, Sadie decides to stay in New York and make the best of it, getting a job at a local nightclub. Sadie immediately catches the eye of Jack Brennan (Edward Arnold), the alcoholic owner of the nightclub. Jack, who is a lonely millionaire, falls head-over-heels for the gorgeous working girl. When Jack proposes, Sadie reluctantly agrees, ready to give up on true love and marry for money. But once she becomes Mrs. Brennan, Sadie is forced to endure the malicious gossip of Jack's friends, who think she is a golddigger. Miserably unhappy, Sadie makes up her mind that she will never have true love again. This fine MGM production, based on a story by Vina Delmar and helmed by the unsinkable Clarence Brown, features classic songs from writers Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed. [More]

Reviews for Sadie McKee
A quintessential Joan Crawford vehicle of the Depression era, this melodrama centers on a working-class femme (cook's daughter) and the three men in her life: bad boy lover Gene Raymond, rich boy Franchot Tone, and drunken millionaire Edward Arnold.
